Mini-Sainsburies

If there's anything to be learnt from what happened to Index its that if local shops dont get used, they close. Sainsbury's/Tesco are useful and convenient, but money spent there is generally at the expense of local shops (which are normally cheaper as it happens).

Do we really want a highstreet landscape dominated by the normal brands? ( Starbucks anyone  )

I wouldn't say no to a Dixons.

Brixton has about a million of those. Evergreen is great and really friendly. The organic shop in Brixton Village is pretty good, and Danny's and Brixton Foods OK for most things.

I was chatting to the owner of Evergreen the other day - he knows how to greet his customers in about 15 languages. Really nice guy. Definitely my favorite greengrocers.

But the market is even cheaper with greater variety and choice

Think I've been spoiled by living so long in Spain and places, but I don't find the choice and variety offered on the market stalls to be that great tbh. They largely seem to be the same variety you'd get in a supermarket. Having said that if I can find it there, I'd rather buy from the market to support the local traders.

Out of interest, has anyone been to the weekend am market at Mango Landing - just wondered what sort of food stuff they sell and what the prices are like..

I've always hated that Sainsburys. They'd always insist on double-bagging everything even when you only had a couple of purchases and they didn't even do us the courtesy of posting up a closure warning with re-opening dates.

i always have to ask n put my foot down (no i don't need a bag!)... as if i cannot carry my own single item without one.

Do. Not. Even. Get. Me. Started.......

it's not they're not friendly it's that they've been conditioned to wrap anything that moves with plastic bags. :(

Which one is Evergreen?

(I've only lived here for 12 years. :o )

South side of Electric avenue on the bit between Electric lane and Atlantic road. Run by an Ethiopian guy with a Spanish (I think) wife. He often shouts out to passers by in their languages - or what he thinks they might speak.

Oh and it has a big sign saying Evergreen above the shop! :D

Beware of the mini big-name supermarkets, they will overcharge on almost everything. There's one near Shoreditch, I think it's a Tesco and Pig went in there once to get me some tissues and a few other bits when our son was ill and I couldn't go out, the bread was about 10p more than our local one.

Thing is, the only time anyone can shop there is on Saturday mornings and I'm either still partying or groaning in bed somewhere - I wish they'd open til 8 some weekdays.

Curry's is overpriced n crap.

I agree. Shopping at the one in Brixton is like having an audience with the Legion of the Damned. I have never met any group of people less interested in selling anyone anything.

You don't remember the 7-11 it replaced...? Now that was truly

I always wondered why are ones in westend called S'burys CENTRAL and one in our little city centre just a plain S'bury LOCAL? Local shop for local people? Fuck that. We're not local people. I reckon theres never been a better timing for a little guerilla action...

People of Brixton....

Get your spraycans and stencils out of woodwork and lets do it!!!!

Mr nipsla reckons that I should have "It's ok all in 1 bag, I'm just going round the corner" on my gravestone.

The old store was shit - new store is shitter. I shall be giving it a wide berth unless I need a pint of milk at 10.30pm on a Sunday!

Two things noteably missing from Brixton: decent CD/Record/Computer Games shop and any sort of retailer of electronics good. Again I suspect running such an emporium would be too much hassle with all the stock that would get lifted.

If you're paying. Mine's a full Phoenix, no eggs and extra mushrooms.

the mushrooms in the phoenix are amazing. no idea what they do to them, but they taste gorgeous. great toast too.

have to say, i went into the mini-sainsburies yesterday and i liked it. i only ever go in there for a sandwich and a drink anyway, so it hasn't changed for me. i liked the fact there was more space, and the way they've arranged the aisles made it look like the shop was actually bigger. and the straight lines were good too.
