Millions Want to Get Into Media - where are they?

Hi - haven't been in this forum much so bear with me

I checked with the Editor and he approved a post in UK Politics looking for some unpaid help with a new political radio show on Resonance FM in London (it's a community station so we are all unpaid!)

http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=178964

The kind people on UK Politics are possibly interested in listening to the show...but...

Does anyone know any employment website where people looking for this sort of media intern opportunity would see it?

thanks Zenie...

well we need help producing the show on a technical level ie right now I need someone to download the chimes of big ben to mix in on our trail that will be played out on air soon - either in my studio or at home...maybe someone to help record the theme tune being played by Hils..someone to download the jpegs of the Recess Monkey and Guido Fawkes jpegs and then getting that printed out on heavy card so they can wear them as masks for the publicity shot..go to joke shop and buy some of those fake stabby knives for the publicity shot...or come up with a better idea...someone to complete the list I have of the radio reviewers of the newspapers and then liaise with Resonances PR agency...sort out a text message service for listeners from one of the services that offer that...help sort out the podcast system - help registering us with itunes and all the others...help my webmeister friend with our website...defend us in court in court when we libel John Prescott

that kind of thing

I'd have suggested Media UK, but you've already found it.

Maybe have a look on Radiotalent? It's full of people looking for unpaid "experience" opportunities. Failing that, send an email to news (at) radiotoday.co.uk and see if they'll post it up.

Maybe contact university/college departments in your area (that run radio production or politics courses) - and let the tutors know of your opportunity.

Sorry, I don't really know any other sites other than the ones posted.

Sounds like fun though, shouldn't be too hard to find someone. :)

Do you pay expenses? :)

Or I mean do you have to pay out of your own pocket to buy stuff for the show etc.

I mean if it means buying fake stabby knives for a tenner, then sure, I'll be reimbursing that out of my own pocket

but not taxis and lunch if you see what I mean - Resonance has zero money to spend on programmes..nada..so anything has to come out of my overdaft (sic)

although the text messaging into the show could be a revenue trickle - the two bloggers have lots of obsessive fans who may be happy to spend 25p to send a text in

http://www.commedia.org.uk/

I think you have to pay to join BUT you can register for their emails free and you get loads of emails from people in community radio asking for all kinds of advice and I think you can also send you your own emails too, although I've not done this

People are always sending out emails asking for volunteers, sometimes paid positions too

good luck :)

See i'd be interested in helping but I dont know radio technology stuff, and I am skint as fuck so cant buy anything :(

I'd be interested in helping, but I'm not sure if there's anything I'd be able to do from Cheshire. I've access to studio and production facilities, though.

Piers...top idea, but you really need to think about the job spec, hours req'd, experience necessary/knowledge etc cos at the moment it's REALLY unclear what you need to know techincally etc. Plus if it's unpaid you should think about including how many hours a week you'd expect it to be etc

I'd definitely be interested in helping if you can post some more info about what sort of person you want and the hours I'd be working.

great!

thanks to all

and fair point on the general un-sortedness of my requirements (can you tell I'm a fluffhead creative gimme a live microphone and I'm happy sort of person?)

just gotta do an hours work and then I will be back online with some lists and an air of efficiency

You may wish to contact universities, particularly those which offer degree courses in media or cultural studies. I know of at least one graduate who may have been interested if it was close enough to where he lived... and if you paid expenses so he could get to you, etc. etc., and there are sure to be others...

Right..here we go - and I rather like the open-source-radio nature of this project...

yes there is plenty to do that does not require money, many hours free, being in London or massive experience - just a willingness to get on the net+phone and find some answers

I will pm those who have offered to help my phone numbers - look forward to talking to you or your friends - if you dont get a pm then please pm me ok..ring me and let's go through the list of things that need doing and grab those you are most suited to

A top radio commercials producer has offered to make our promos and trails so that's fantastic, once I have had a chat with him I will put him in touch with those who also have access to studios/editing/that kind of thing...having sound effects and fake ads and all sorts of musicalish beds will really enrich the show

Obviously the holy grail in the future would be *ALSO* finding a producer for the show - with some experience - someone who is in London, has a few hours free during the week -especially on Tuesday afternoon - to pull stuff together and coordinate other voluntary help in a gracious and grateful way.

Since it is all in my head at the moment that person will be me

But in the future..ooh that would be a find and a half!

thanks again - much appreciated

guineveretoo pls empty your box!

I am sorry - have now cleared it.

(that's the first time that has happened to me and, suddenly, I feel all popular and loved because I have enough acquaintances on here to have filled up my box!:D)

{how sad is that!:eek: }

Try uni noticeboards in journalism departments at City, Westminster, Greenwich, London College of Communications (or whatever the London College of Printing is called nowadays).

Specify what skills you need though, otherwise you might end up with loads of clueless undergrads who just want to be in the meejah with not a clue about how to work in it.

Or perhaps try for some politically minded types at LSE, see if they have a student radio station, anyone with a bit of experience who might be interested?

Try putting a notice up through Indymedia, or maybe squats/social centres, isn't there a mailing list still for people who were involved in the Square near SOAS? And there's a social centre in East(-ish) London, I forget what it's called though, near a hospital... some activist types know their way round video/sound equipment and the like...

Problem is, you're based in Soho, and I reckon loads of bright young things in London who are trying to get into the meejah are mainly interested in celebrity and becoming CBeebies/Reality TV/Shopping Channel presenters, they're not necessarily interested in doing unpaid altruistic type stuff.

Hot political gossip show now needs Producer/Publicist

Hot political gossip show now needs Producer/Publicist

(I wanted to update you on where we are at - now working towards show 5...last two shows I am v proud of...we've got some excellent people helping us but this position is glaringly unfilled!)

This is the 30 minute live and scurrillous political gossip show every Tuesday night on Resonance 104.4FM (as Westminster prepares itself for the bearpit of Prime Minister's Questions the next day)

My regular guests are the two top political bloggers Guido Fawkes (libertarian right winger) and Recess Monkey (Labour left) who are total media tarts/excellent performers. Last week we were joined by Sian Berry - principal speaker of the Green Party - and the week before that the Tory London Mayoral candidate who wants to abolish the London Mayor.

It's a funny and informative show - we cut through the polite BBC double-sourced nonsense. We talk about the rumours and backstabbing that actually determines how our country is run. Who's up, who's down and who's getting shafted.

If you only listen to the BBC you aren't getting half the picture.

Listen to the show at http://www.theknivesareout.com

if you like the sound of it and you want something real on your CV then get in touch asap...

We need someone who can coordinate our other volunteers (professional sound engineers/editors and helpers). Someone who can help us get guests, look after them and say thanks afterwards, someone to listen live to the show in the studio (Soho) and help us write a publicity paragraph, keep in touch with the newspaper reviewers and take charge of the podcasting (we are already listed on iTunes) and keep our blog lively and help encourage listener feedback via email and our rantline ..someone with confidence, competence and a flair for publicity. Resonance is a community station so no one get's paid...

but it's fun - get in touch via rant (at) theknivesareout.com

I have put a pdf advert up at this address...I'd be very grateful if anyone feels able to print it out and put it up in colleges, media centres, anywhere...many thanks

damn link doesn't work...you can see why we need a producer eh
