Mike Tyson, greatest fighter that ever lived!

I certainly respected Tyson's destructive punching and naked aggression, but my all-time favourite fighter (from my lifetime anyway) is still Tommy 'The Hitman' Hearns.

Watching him demolish Roberto Duran and then completely spark him out with a thunderous right cross was a lesson in boxing skill combined with unrelenting aggression for me:

Total destruction of one of the all-time greats in just two rounds.

Arturo 'Thunder' Gatti vs Tommy 'The Hitman' Hearns (when both were in their prime) would have been awesome.

For those who've never seen it, here's the entire Hagler vs Hearns rumble, apologies for the commentary but I couldn't find a version in English that showed the whole fight in one go.

Mike Tyson in his prime is at the top for me. He was a machine. You didn't expect anyone to survive three rounds let alone beat him.

Ali was unquestionably brilliant but I don't think a match for his awesome punching power. Just possibly he might have danced for the duration of the fight, but I can't see him winning.

i think Ali would have jabbed Iron Mikes head off before Tyson could get near him.George Foreman,Ken Norton and Joe Frazier all had hitting power but what happened to them?A combination of Dundee/Ali had done the homework before the bouts and Ali put the plans into practice in the ring.Ali would have wiped the floor with Tysons stupid looking face.:D(hope he dont read this)

i'd put him in the top10, but no way number1. holyfield beat him by being smarter than him twice, i think he could have beaten him at his best as well

ali would have merced him imo, imagine how much he'd wind him up before the fight, it probably wouldn't get to the ring

There was a period when Tyson would have blasted through anyone in his path including Ali. That's not to rate him as a boxer, though. He was an upward punching machine... a monster. He'd walk through a jab just to hit you. Ali was a beauty to watch though.

However... for sheer guts and skill you have to go aome way to match the Eubanks - Benn and Eubanks - Watson fights.

in a fight he'd beat any other boxers, in a boxing match tho?

I don't just mean at his 'worst', I mean that the most famous fights like Rumble in the Jungle, which are often seen as his best, are not actually when he was at his best. The only reason I differentiated between Ali and Clay is to denote the two different periods.

I think the Tyson of 86-88 would have beaten the Ali of Rumble in the Jungle.
The Rumble was certainly one of Ali's greatest results, but far from him at his best, well... the part of him that was able to take punishment, he had a cast iron chin, but I doubt many people see it as Ali at his best.

Tyson was taken the distance 4 times in his his peak, Tillis, Green, Tucker, Smith, all big men at 6' + (3" 4" 5" etc...)

Lennox Lewis at 6' 5" would have had Tyson at any time. Ali himself was 6' 3" with serious ring smarts.

If not intimidated by Tyson and if big, he was beatable, very beatable.

But I have the utmost respect for his skills as a boxer.

Foreman was arguably as dangerous as Tyson when Ali fought him, and he did him.

He'd have done Tyson too IMO.

It's obvious Mike would have had a chance with "anyone ever" because of his speed though.

HolyfieldTyson was way past Tyson's best.

Tyson v Ali - I read about the same as Ali v Frazier.

If they fought 3 times, I think Tyson would have won once. Frazier says Ali has a weakness in that he goes back in a straight line when under attack, which leaves him open to a left hook. That's how Frazier beat him and wouldn't be surprised if Tyson did the same.

Loved watching Tyson in my yoot. Staying up til 3/4/5 in the morning to watch a fight that lasted about 90 seconds. :D

Am old enough to watch a few of Ali's fights, but he was massively past his best.

Lewis was a quality act imo.

Although I read he had problems with his hydration levels apparently?

Didn't drink enough water for some reason. Rahman immediately springs to mind.

Yeah, Rahman and McCall, those two rather baffling and lazy defeats where he lost to quite random shots, are the ones which make me question his chin a bit.

Then again against a peak Tyson he'd have properly been prepared and done his homework etc.

Just trust him to be a West Ham fan ;)
