Mike skinner: streetwise chav or urban legend?

Fair play to the man, for creaming cash off cord wearing wannabe trendies who listen to it whilst driving round in thier BMW's cos they wanna be down with the kids and bleat on about the intelligent lyrics and meaningfull insight into the modern day society all created in a poetic yet urban street style.

i've not got a BMW, only a bus pass. :(

Seriously though I sit in traffic everyday and no matter what. . . there's always some middle aged bloke sunglasses on, usually in a pink shirt, purple or yellow tie, driving a BMW/Audi or something silver and over inflated in price. Blarring it out of the windows.

Anyway Dub you listen to absolutelly EVERYTHING !!!

people . .me included would kill to get my hands on your record collection :D

Ah but you heart Kylie. . . so your also immune from the BMW analogy.

Everyone else apart form you and Dub is fair game, unless of course they come up with a valid reason :D

right, so my age colour and profession should be a bar against me enjoying certain kinds of music?

grow up.

erm, where did i say that? i was commenting on one gig a friend of mine went to, not making a judgement about race and music!

unless of course your a music journo/media type latching on to a scene cos you think its gonna make you look 'edgy' or 'cool' of course, in which case, carry on!

mate of mine went to a grime gig the other day. said it was full of white music journo's and media types - 'keeping it real' :D

There /\/\/\

It does kind of make it sound like a bad thing they were there doesn't it?

How do you tell which ones were trying to keep it real and which ones were just genuinely enjoying the gig?

as Pie Eye has said, if your comment was an innocent one, it certainly didn't seem that way. Rather, it seemed like a very judgemental post.

It’s alright Dan’s only jealous ‘cos he wishes he was a 'white media type' with the balls to go to such places :(

poor Dan U :(

Trousers generally give it away, it would seem.

I'm wearing some black linen slacks. Am I street, or neat?

Actually though....

If Mike Skinner isn't keeping it real and his listeners aren't keeping it real then that must have been one motherfucker of a metaphysical gig. I wonder what reality it did exist in?

fucks sake it was a flippant observation about a gig my mate found amusing.

get a life! you mean youve never once laughed at Tim Westwood? ;)

I don't think he's a legend, but he's brillaint at what he does. How many artists can you hear on the radio and instantly think "that's so and so". You can with Mike Skinner.

IMO the 'formula' is starting to wear a bit thin and the beats aren't quite as good as theu sed to be, but he's still head a shoulders above most other people.

As for the post that said he was middle class - he grew up in Weoley Castle - if that's your idea of middle class, then you'll think Brixton is full of upper class gentry. I don't care if he went to grammar school, he still probaly experienced a lot fot hst stuiff he wrote about and if not, the "Weak become Heroes" has gone up even further in my estimation

That poster's "FACTS" seemed to align nicely with his own dislike. Strange that

yes, how do you know all this? Do you know him personally, or is it all 3rd party info?

I can take it or leave it (Mike Skinner that is), I'm just wondering where all this information comes from and whether it's true or not.

Yes I do. Or I should say I did. Before he was famous........hmmmmm, good title that.

I'm the person who sat with Mike when he was on the verge of jacking it all in because none of the labels were interested in his material, persuading him to keep going. Didn't realise he'd screw us all to make a better life for himself. I'm the person who gave Mike gigs before anyone knew him, when he called himself Daspyke soon followed by the name Houseboy Tony Pasta. I'm the person that sent his demos out to everyone I knew.

And if you do happen to own, or ever come across a 12" vinyl called "Movin', Doin' it" by Houseboy Tony Pasta you'll notice how the only vox on there is a ripped off James Brown sample. In fact, the vast majority of the track is James Brown...but, hey, Mike would never knowingly fuck over another artist would he.

Yeah, but everyone's fucked James Brown over... it's like a hip hop rite of passage...

James Brown ıs on record as beıng proud of how often he's sampled, and why wouldn't he be?

A local DJ gave my mate a copy of the first record a few months before it was released, we really liked it, fresh and original, amusing and great tunes going on behind. Didn't like the second record (although I only heard the singles to be fair) but like the new single.

So I was bored of him but like the new song, where does that leave me??

Let's. Push. Things. Forward.
