"Migrant numbers must be reduced"

so smear artist .. explain how is it discriminatory for a trade union to support employing locally .. the only discrimination in all of this is that capital will dsicrininate by employing as cheap as possible ..

btw did you oppose positive discrimination in favour of under represented BME groups and women?

The UNITE statement was clear in it's opposition to discrimination both locally and nationally. UNITE said nothing about it being 'discriminatory' to support local employment.

If you want to talk about 'positive discrimination' can I suggest another thread?

Some tentative conclusions:

There are examples of economies that have enjoyed sustained growth where that growth has to a greater or lesser extent been fuelled by remittances from abroad.

There are other examples where remittances have not had this effect, and emigration has continued apace as part of a long decline. Many parts of the Caribbean and, in long periods of its history, Ireland, are examples of this.

My guess is that in the former case, remittances have acted alongside other strategies. I would also be interested to know how different kinds of emigration affect the outcome. Again, my guess is that where the emigration has been temporary, and the migrants have returned home after a certain number of years, these will tend to be the cases where emigration has helped the home country's economy. Where they have left for good, I guess that this will have been part of the long decline.

This is conjecture, and more a basis for further study than anything else.

OK LBJ a more reasoned post there.
Of course remittances can not be simply overlooked when it comes to the debate about migration.
But if people use remittances to justify support for free market policies i think its only fair that people who dont support the free market question how much effect they have.

They do have some effect yes but the effect they do have is often to increase inequality in the countries that people send money back too.

I have made it clear on numerous threads that i think when rich nations take skilled workers from poorer nations those countries should be compensated. In that case it would genuinelly do something to counter the catastrophic effect of economim migration on poorer nations.
The UK should not be taking teachers, doctors and engineers from poorer countries without giving compensation.
