Middlesbrough FC

fuck me. is there anything you lot aren't experts on?

the riverside is a perfectly decent little ground, think yourselves lucky you don't have to cross the main road to get to it any more.

Middlesbrough FC are benefitting from the continued patience and largesse of Steve Gibson, who is probably the best chairman in the PL. Southgate has also learned his trade there and they have become a skilful and physical team. Tuncay is absolute class, Downing plays better for Boro than he does for England and the defence is good enough that Wheater can't even get into the team (and he is a player that I would welcome with open arms at West Ham.) Added to which they have one of the best youth academies in the country.

As for abbreviating their name - what do you want them to call themselves - Middles?

Brough?

There's a lot of crap written about phonetic teaching techniques in schools, but they'd don't need to trial it by misspelling the abbreviation for football teams.

Half the country and more spells it Middleboro(ugh) rather than Middlesbrough. And who could blame them

(comes over all Eats Shoots and Leaves)

That's a bonus in my book. In a male dominated environment 'Bras' must be good - they're virtually a polar opposite of 'pants' and that means bad, doesn't it?
;)

Why does a simple enquiry about my team then result in a bunch of geordies laying siege to the age old question of whether its in the North East or Yorkshire. Personally I think its both and I'm proud to come from there. I also really like Northumbria both the area and people. Yet for some reason, Newcastle supporters just come across as embittered and dare I say jealous of anything else.
Why is that?

Oh by the way, although I now live in London, I'm still a season ticket holder and I do take the point that the Riverside is souless (and cold) but it's a damn site better than Ayresome Park ever was, if not in atmopshere.

boro bore me! I hate southgate with a passion i hated clown shoes before him and bryan robson before him.

and wheater at west ham? Fuck that.

Gibson is a good charimen and your acadaemy is one of the better ones though. But fuck boro one of those teams i've never liked for no real reason.

Some right uninformed shite showing its face in this thread.

"Boro" is how you pronounce 'brough'. It is the same pronunciation as burgh, and borough. The spelling used to be Mydilsburgh, and it just shows how languages and spelling evolve differently in other places. This is a Good Thing

The North East vs North Yorkshire thing is, I think, generational. My granddad sounds much more like a Yorkshire man than a Geordie/Mackem, which makes sense, seeing as he IS a Yorkshire man - Middlesbrough was part of North Yorkshire until Cleveland was created. But my generation sound much more like Geordies and Mackems, and most wouldn't associate with Yorkshire.

However, it gets more confusing, as Cleveland ceised to exist in 1996, and Middlesbrough became a unitary authority, but belonging to North Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes. So, yeah! Hope that's cleared things up..

The placing of the stadium might seem odd when first encountered, but there is good reason for siting it where it is - which is not, by the way, miles from the town. There's been an idea to improve the town by developing the 'wasteland' down by the river, as many other cities have done with their regeneration projects. For whatever reason, it's failed to happen and has been "on the way" for more than decade.

Moving the stadium there, as well as the colleges (which happened last year, I think) was meant to kick-start the development by attracting businesses. If thousands of football fans and students regularly go there, then I suppose it'll be a much more attractve site for organizations. Fingers crossed something will actually happen now!
