Microwaves, would you miss yours

Haven't used a microwave in nearly 10 years and don't miss them at all. My dad got a very early one in the late 70s a decade before they had anything like ready meals and I've been traumatised by rubber microwave 'omlettes' :(

i was looking at recipe sites earlier on and i've come across this recipe for microwave brownies. I might try it out, it looks so easy and quick

1 banana, mashed
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
4 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
chocolate chips
Directions:
Mix wet ingredients in a bowl...add dry ingredients.... mix everything together well and put in a small microwavable safe dish that's been greased up with cooking spray.

Sprinkle with chocolate chips and microwave on high for 4-5 minutes
oooh - tell us if it tastes nice...

I do use it, because it uses less leccy than turning on the stupid electric oven. And because it makes less washing up than saucepans. But I hardly ever did when I lived with my ex and had a proper sized kitchen. Things change.

I wish I could get rid of the microwacve in my flat actually. I could use the space to prepare food on, as there's no other space in the kitchen. Instead I have to do it in the bath :(

I'd quite happily have a microwave that only defrosted - pretty much the only thing it gets used for.

Microwave + big freezer = 100's of options for inpromptu dinners.

And when the BF puts the butter in the fridge ( ), 10 secs on full power brings it back to spreadable consistancy ( )

I used to have that problem, i have a very small kitchen. However solved it by attaching the micro to the wall with brackets.

I barely use mine - once a week at most.

Jacket potatoes get a start in there, I reheat leftovers with it occasionally and I heat up milk for hot chocolate, but that's about it.

Microwaves have nearly killed me..... twice
Actually no the first time to be more accurate I nearly killed myself with one, they really don't like being used with a big lump of metal inside :D
But the second one just decided to self combust all on its own.
So banned from my house and they make things taste like shit so I can't say I really care.

In our house its used for defrosting, heating milk in a mug, reheating leftovers, baked beans, starting baked spuds. Cos its a combi oven I use it a fair bit on the proper oven mode when I'm not cooking enough to fill the regular oven ( I hate using the regular oven for just one thing - such a waste).

I reckon I'd miss it, but not for long.

next question then :D how do I dispose of it? is it a ring the council job?
Can you not take it to the tip?

My mum gave me a microwave a few years ago and I can't remember the last time I used it. My gf uses it occasionally for heating soup and things, but it's just as easy to put it on the hob imo :)

I have a book entitled three course meals with a microwave.

I have never actually tried to cook a three course meal entirely with a microwave, but that is mainly down to the fact that I have never cooked a three course meal in the first place.

I find them crap for reheating soup TBH. I make a big pot of soup every other day we eat half of it and we reheat the rest on the 2nd day.

It takes longer to reheat in the microwave, there are cold spots and scorching - it's easier and quicker in a pan.

I do keep micromummy meals in the freezer for emergencies, I use the micromummy for this and also for cooking frozen peas and defrosting and that's it.

Oh and for that junk food ultra high fat popcorn occasionally

I'd imagine that if nothing else it saves energy. There are many dishes/products that require 20 minutes of boiling in water... or 2.5 minutes in the microwave.

I happen to use it for many things. If I have the time I will use the oven as it gives many dishes a fuller flavour. But when you're in a hurry it's superb.

And it's really fucking great for doing rice. Boiling rice is the spawn of the devil and half the time it's either hard or soggy. With these new microwave rice bags you can't possibly go wrong :)

I hadly ever use it because the proper oven is nearly always better for the job.

I reckon they're better than boiling for doing veg tho, it keeps all the flavour.

dunno, sometimes stuff like this needs proper disposal and I'm not sure what does

Our tip has got portocabins which take stuff like monitors, fridges and things, so it may be worth giving them a bell

What you want is a pressure cooker.
Bring up to boil, rinse, add dash of oil, bring up to pressure, shake well, turn off heat

The house that I recently moved into doesn't have a microwave and I have to say that I haven't missed it so far at all. I think that may have a lot to do with growing up without one though. My mum hates the things so they are still forbidden in her precious kitchen.
