Microsoft Vista

I've had XP blue screen 3 times changing the motherboard. Its more a matter of luck than any design.

I've Vista and Windows media player wouldn't play anything other than DVD's. I just don't use it.

Fuck knows what goes through the minds at Microsoft. How can they not sort out such a basic problem?

Much as I crave new eye candy, I'm steering clear of Vista until I hear good things about the finished service pack.

Which may be never.

I'm really surprised you haven't gone over to the other side with a Mac or Linux.

I'm schizophrenic and signs are telling me that Microsoft raging empire is on the decline. :)

It's share of the home user market is declining ever so slightly, but that's about it. Sadly they are big enough to survive unpopular products such as Vista. That said, Vista is a good OS that it's fashionable to dislike.

Ed's just a pragmatist though, he uses what works best for him, which is currently windows, and he does have a valid point about certain bits of software not being available on Linux (or Mac for that matter) - not that that's always Linux's fault.

Personally, I love Linux in the enterprise. Makes my job a helluva lot easier. And I use it at home because I like it more than anything else. KDE4 will me back to XP unless something is done about it though.

I guess your right. I see more and more users converting to Linux all the time. Businesses well there another thing.

I also find it strangely disturbing the ATM's here in South Africa are XP powered. Although I'm told the servers there linked to are Linux or some form of BSD.

Yeah well I prefer Gnome myself. KDE looks good. I find Gnome more practical.

Still find Microsofts start menus to be an unpleasant experience in general. From glitching and pausing on trying to do something so complex as display my list of previously viewed documents in XP. To the fucking stupid pseudo order they try and group tools together with making the entire process about 4 times more annoying than it ever needed to be. Classic mode --> control panel, oh look everything i wanted in 1 place, instead of splitting it into 4 or 5 fucking sections which make no sense whatsoever about the grouping decisions and then force me to constantly look for the right one and switch between them.

Various things about Vista seem appealing, but nothing thats gonna make me put up with all the bullshit hassle that changing over seems to entail. Much like moving from 2k to XP at the beginning. Fail to see how you can repeatedly drop back deadlines, drop huge numbers of useful features. takes years developing the bloody thing and still have a product which isnt really suitable for use until at least a year after its release date.

Linux always seemed fine, so long as I didnt want to do anything too complicated with it, in which case you seem to spend your whole time fucking about with trying to get the thing working.

I built my brother a PC at the weekend and chose to install vista home premium over xp, mainly so he can play media files through his xbox using media centre, and it was cheaper than XP.

I put 4gig of RAM in the PC, Athlon X2 4800+ and an 8600GT graphics card and it scores 5 on the 'experience index'. I was expecting a bit of hassle with it, but the setup was flawless and I've been using it all week and I have been impressed so far. The only problem I've had was that my old copy of Nero 6 wasn't compatible.

It connected to my home network straight away and recognised my network storage link without any configuration (something that XP has never managed to setup without hassle). As well as all the improved cosmetics and gadgets it has played all video formats I've thrown at it and copied files from my other PC's and drives very quickly as well as performing well with all the usual work stuff, internet, torrenting etc. The next test will be with my bro's games and seeing how the xbox media centre stuff works, but so far so good.

I've had no DRM problems and my bro now has lots of music and film files copied over from my PC that work with no problems and the 'evaluation' copies of Nero 8 and Office I installed work fine too.

I wouldn't mind it on my setup, but I'd need a new mobo, processer, gfx card and RAM to get the specs it needs to run smoothly and I can't really justify that expense in order to do the same things I do now using a prettier OS. I think I'll wait until I need to build a new machine from scratch before I move over.
