EDIT: oh man, that one gets out of time. still great though :D

Marvin Gaye -a rare insight into his lost pub rock years

Stairway to Heaven -Led Zepp ft John Shuttleworth :D

It's all brilliant. This is the Best Thing of 2009 so far.

The only concern is that this technology could put John Shuttleworth out of business, which would be a Bad Thing.

liam got sozzled last night and sang "sister christian" ( :D ) after i begged so i could songsmith it...i want to put it on youtube soooo bad...

ive been threatened though. :o

funnest toy. :D

I notice the laptop in this seems to be a Macbook Pro..with a sticker not-so-subtly placed over the Apple logo...

:hmm:

Yup. Hilarious isn't it. :D

You think Microsoft Research might have done a little... erm... research.

And what the fuck was that old brick thing that the Indian fella with the hare lip was using??

:D:D

As far as the software goes, looks pretty useful... though whoever produced that advert should have suphuric acid injected into their eyeballs and eardrums.

It's a hoot. Perfect for post pub singalongs. And that's about it for adults.

Mmmm... maybe - I've got Rockband on the Wii for that beered up karaoke vibe.

No I actually think the chords and structures software like this will throw up at random are useful when writing music.

Sometimes you need the random elements for things to fall into place, I use arpeggiation machines for the same purpose.

I heard the Songsmith 'Roxanne' played on the radio yesterday and it's been on my brain all day:

'Rrrrrroxanne! *Bing de bong de bing de bong bing bong, Bing de bong de bing de bong bing bong*'

Find an acapella versin of the song you want (they're 'out there' on the internet if you know where to look. I don't). then play it into songsmith. Probably have to do some post-production too, to make it sound right.

Apparently and according to the very few Google search results that came up, importing vocals/accapella's to Songsmith is nigh on impossible, thats unless you have alot of techy know how, macs etc. Gutted :(

I wonder if MS did this purposely too avoid copyright/royalty hassles?

Wish i could use it properly to do stuff like the Motorhead one.
I can't find any songs online with just the vocals, so all i've
managed to do thus far is Chicken Town by John Cooper Clarke
set to a hip hop backing and it is beyond awful.
