Methinks I'll wait til I have space for a proper studio for them

You don't need a proper studio as such, you can get great results simply by hanging a thick duvet behind whoever is singing, and, if you can afford one, using something like an SE Reflexion Filter.

It's what's behind the singer that's most important though, you need to stop sound reflections from the room bouncing back into the mic, hence the need for a thick duvet to absorb the sound.

Nah, just don't have the space where I am at the moment to do any proper recording. Have to put up and take down my equipment every time - it's too much hassle.

What's the best value condenser I could get hold of that will still sound miles better than an SM58?

Check out the Samson c01 mics can go for about about £35.00 ish if your lucky on on ebay and fantastic condenser for the price , very accurate sounds , becoming one of the classic bargains and in my opinion much better than the new c03

If buying mics second hand make sure you get a chance to smell it (seriously :D ).

If it smells of cigarette smoke walk away, smoke is really bad for them...

Seriously, the well used mics in the rehearsal studio we use all smell of poo :(

I'm tempted to bring my own in.

Yeah agreed and I would only recommend buying new anyway as especially mics like the Samson condensor are easily messed up if thrown around , so the link really was to show the model I was recommending , the "poo" smell is usually due to stale spit which that in itself is enough to put me off buying 2nd hand .

New Samsons old models packaged turn up on ebay now and again for £35.00 as most stupidly believe that the newer co2 & 3 are better which isnt the case so the older models although new fetch less .;)

I would've been well up for getting that, but I've not got enough privacy at the moment to do any recording at the moment. And by the time that I do, I'll probably be up for buying a brand new one.

That's cool. I would be open to offers though & when i say used once or twice i'm talking about no more than 1hrs usage in total. Anyway mate, whatever you go for i hope you enjoy using it.
