It is matronly, but it works from a political perspective. She's trying to give a "New Camelot" (aka Jackie Kennedy) feel to the inauguration. Besides, you don't want to look like a ho for something like that. Better to err on the side of too conservative.

Yes, but perhaps you could consider the possibility that we actually are aware that Michelle is an alum of both Princeton and Harvard, and had a pretty decent career as a lawyer and campaigner/ fundraiser before her husband even decided to run for office.

It just so happens that on this thread we are ooohing at the pretty dresses.

Nothing wrong with tall or muscular. I just didn't think the dress worked with the shape of her shoulders. It would have worked better if the dress was entirely strapless.
