Michel Platini: This man can save English football

He has a very good point though about the top English teams being propped up by obscene levels of debt, stuffed full of foreign players and entirely reliant on foreign investment/speculation. I'm not saying it's any better in Europe mind, but it is a rum state of affairs.

As I recall, when Cardiff played Arsenal there wasn't an English player in their team, which rather spoiled our anti-English chants :)

london isn't an english city tho

i don't get the whole nationalism thing with owners either, why has noone ever made a fuss about Berlusconi owning ACMilan, thats fucked up as well

That's not racism. He's suggesting that club owners should have some connection and grounding in the city their team purports to represent and not just be the plaything of wealthy foreign speculators whose sole interest is in financial gain and/or prestige.

And if they do, they should be excused being utter crooks?

(I think that was the point, anyway)

So why does he give so much credence to Burlo for being an Italian in charge of an Italian club. And I don't think playing the race card is the level of the gutter. Racism in European football is a huge elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss, being easier for Europe to beat on the UK. All I see in this article is someone making the claim for more power to himself, and making a very bad argument for it.

I don't think the situation in the UK is ideal either - but at the same time, I don't think M. Platini's vision of a European football culture owned and run by some nebulous group of European business as opposed to global businessness smacks of classic parochialism.

It's the level of the gutter cos I have some sympathies with his concerns about football clubs being millionares playthings, so indirectly that's what your aiming at me.
In comparison to an amorphous businessman owning an Italian club it's preferable for the likes of Platini. For me it's preferable that a scouser owns Everton rather than some twat with big bucks from anywhere frankly, that doesn't make me parochial or racist thanks.
I'd say he's playing a game with them, Berlusca and Co aren't too keen on him btw, so it's not some symbiotic relationship. He's also in favour of ending the CL and making it champiopns only, that won't be popular with anyone, though i'm sure that will slip away if there's enough pressure.
The crap stuff he comes out with rather proves my point that whilst his appointment was and is preferable to the likes of the previoous UEFA top bods just being a former footballer isn't enough.

Ah right, so if it's a local boy owning the place for financial gain and prestige it's ok, but not if it's a nasty foreigner who doesn't have any 'connection'?

What a load of bollocks.

im guessing the theroy is. local boy= less likelt to be atwat & more likely to actually care about the team rather then his investment.

No, it was the comments about the owner being 'arabs' and the players being from Africa which got my goat, and if you're happy to criticise on that basis I'll happily land put you in the 'racist' camp.

Can we stop calling each other racists please. Seems to me that was Platini trying to 'dumb it down' to get across his messgae in the simplest terms. He failed pretty badly and it leaves him looking a bit patronsing and two faced to my mind.

Doesn't work, though, does it? As has been pointed out, Milan, Juve, West Ham... all dodgy as fuck.

we arent owned by a local anymore but yeah terry brown was a corrupt fucker. also look at the new wimbeldon.

i think i should run UEFA to be honest.

Champions league can have 2 entrants from each country max (i'd agree with the purists that it should really only be one, but i can embrace the way the game has gone) and be renamed something else to spell out the fact that it's not just for 'champions'. Maybe the 'European League'

Over, say, the next 6 years, all teams will have to move toward meeting the following criteria
a) ensuring club spendature is proportional to club income.
Say 75%, which means 3/4 of the clubs spending must come from their own revenue.
I'd then allow the clubs to secure debts on no more than, lets say, 20% of their assets. Which would allow clubs to take a financial risk if they wanted, but only upto a limit.
b) Enclude at least 3 players which were at the club before their 18th birthday in each matchday squad, of which at least 2 must be from the clubs own country.

vote me.
or, as this is urban - tear my plans apart

anyway, plantini just wants more newspaper space, and what easier way to get it then to slag england's national team

yes he has a point in some cases, the level of debt, premier league heading for a fall, etc etc, but why single out the english game?

london city is a capitalist fair

the outskirts of london is a crack den
Tell you what: if you want to pursue your increasingly bizarre and rambling thoughts about London, please start a new thread rather than mess up this one.

And if you're only here to troll, well we both know what happens to trollers sooner or later.

I don't want any millionaire arab, pakistani, white, chinese, european turning up and buying a part of working class culture and history like some plaything for the sole purpose of making profit. Imho clubs should be municipally owned and controlled by the local community, which, could well fall foul of your criteria.
