Michael Owen

Augie March

blahem
Just been watching Sunday Supplement (I know, bad idea) and Oliver Holt was on there was describing Owen as a victim because of the problems at Newcatsle. How on earth is he a victim? I just don't get how because of off the field problems, players somehow become exempt from bad performances. As a captain, Owen is just as much responsible from the negativity at the club as anyone else. He was interviewed a few weeks back bemoaning the complete lack of confidence at the club. Surley as one of the figureheads of the club, he should be sticking the boot up the team, yet he comes across as an utter defeatist. For me, he's exemplifyig the entire structure at Newcastle at the moment and as an outsider, I feel that he probably should be the first out the door when the inevitable re-building comes at the club.

How do Newcastle fans feel about him?

They had Alan Sugar on football focus yesterday and he said very similar things . Such as it's the job of the player to go out on the pitch and play and no external factors should affect that because otherwise they aren't doing their job properly . I think it was more aimed at Tottenham but it applies equally to Newcastle !

A similar thing happened with Danny Guthrie's horror tackle a few weeks back. Pundits were actually defending him, as if he wasn't really to blame for what he did. Tis utter bollocks.

Whether he's a victim or part of the cause, were I in Owen's position I'd be counting down the days until June.

nobody'll want him :D nobody did when Real were practically begging for people to take him off their hands, thats why he ended up at newcastle in the first place!

I thnk owen is a victim. Not beacuse of the shite going on at newcastle but the fact that its seemingly affected everyone else at the club.

Owen is in very good form at the moment despite everything going on and if a few more players actully turned up to play then i reckon the season he would be having would be incredible. 5 goals in the current newcastle side is amazing.

I don't agree that he's a victim at all. We can't afford to lose him though.

Thing is it's not about how good he might be, because yeah, he's a quality forward who will always bag goals. The problem lies with how commited he might be to the club and for a club captain to go on telly and basically moan how none of the team has confidence is ridiculous. That is exactly the kind of thing not needed when a club is in such dire straits as yours is.

Then he gets defended by idiot journalists who think that it's the board fault all the time. Mike Ashley doesn't play for Newcastle, Denis Wise doesn't and neither does Joe Kinnear. It's the eleven men on the pitch that do and they need to be held just as accountable for the disastrous start to the season as everyone else.

Totally agree there. Though Ashley/wise etc haven't helped the situation it has to be said, for some reason i have confidence in Kinnear though.

I think you have to have confidence in Kinnear because if not, this season we'll be a lost cause. To be honest though, I think one of the best things that could happen to Newcastle this year, is relegation. There needs to be a lot of egos taken down a peg or too and a sense of realism and pragmatism needs to be set in so that the club can be properly rebuilt from the ground up.

What Owen is experiencing now is somewhat karmic really. He stalled on a new contract at Liverpool (as he is doing now) and with less than a season left Madrid made an £8m offer and he told Liverpool he wanted to go. So he went and did very well, despite limited opportuities, then was told he was surplus to requirements. Liverpool wanted him back and he wanted to go back, but they were only offering about £11m max. Newcastle had their £18m offer accepted. All Owen had to do was say he only wanted the Liverpool move and Madrid would have cut their losses on him. Instead Owen bottled it and accepted the Newcastle move. His main aim in all of this was to re-stablish his England career.

Now here he is struggling with a crisis club and not in favour with the England coach. Good enough for him. He will probably go to Everton or Spurs in January for about £5m and hope that one of the big boys come in for him in the summer. If he continues his forms (likely) and stays injury free (unlikely) then it could happen.

He will score the winner at Goodison today by the way ;)

hardly a victim, biggest problem he seems to have is the possibility that they will reduce his wages from around 110k a week to 85k a week, and he's not automatic choice for england any more - can't really say he's a victim

I would love to see him back at Liverpool, I can't think of many proven goal scorers like him about, I reckon he'd keep Keane out of the side after a few weeks, just his injury record that does him no favours.

Torres/Owen would be a awesome combination.

How do Newcastle fans feel about him?

Owen is a mercenary cunt and deserves everything that comes his way.

Kind of makes the 25,000 fucking bell ends who turned up mid-week to see him unveiled look like even bigger pricks than they already did. Actually there's no 'kind of' about it.

He is still a great goalscorer, touch of a telephone box though you can't argue with his record, its impressive even during his games for Newcastle, considering for most of those he has played he would be coming back from illness....he'd be in my England squad

Vitriol? That's me being fair and balanced.

For you, admittedly, that is fair and balanced.

But he scored 118 goals in 216 League appearances for your club, and was then transferred to Real Madrid for a substantial fee given that, if I recall correctly, he was almost out of contract. In those circumstances, I think he'd be forgiven for thinking that any RedScouse fan taking your view of him was an ungrateful prick.

He is a great goalscorer but he isn't really much of a captain. He doesn't seem to have any connection to Newcastle despite having played for us for years imo

Most my friends disagree with me but I think that Owen was a terrible purchase for Newcastle, our squad has been paper thin for years and he probably costs the same as 3 or 4 squad players, us buying him is so symbolic of that stupid attitude that Newcastle should be in the top 4 which has gotten us into so much shit

£8m with just less than a season to go. A scenario he had engineered by stalling on contract talks despite numerous assurances by him that he would be signing a new contract. At that time with two or more years left on a contract he would have fetched at least £25m. Therefore £8m was a bit of a kick in the teeth - as opposed to substantial - for most LFC fans.

Crouch was in the same boat this summer AND Liverpool wanted to sell him and they still got £11m for him.

Given the inflation in the transfer market, £8 million then must be worth about £20 million now. You also got a player in exchange, didn't you?

I can understand why the RedScouse would have been a bit upset if he'd gone back on a promise to sign a new deal but he's entitled to leave at the end of his contract if he wants and given the way some players behave, that in no way justifies Skyscraper's bile.

Yes - Nunez :D

Basically Liverpool got skanked on the deal. Read my previous post above. He wanted to come back and Livepool wanted him back but at a lot less than Newcastle were offering. If he dug his heels in he would have got his way.

I was gutted when he left but he was a top player for Liverpool and his two goals in the 2001 FA Cup Final remain my favourite live footballing memory.

Is the correct answer.

Although you can add to this that for two years he strung us along, saying he was going to sign a new contract and then stiffed us at the last minute. Thanks for the Good times Michael, but you've made your bed and if memory serves (and it does) we did rather well whilst you warmed Madrid's bench.

Life can be a cunt, can't it?

Neve wanted MO, never.

His signing was a by product of Shepherds ego play to be one of the big boys in Europe - 'cet he got shafted after selling Woodgate to Real and them realisng that they had brought a talented crock, hence the MO fee required

Football players should not be allowed to give interviews talking about the back room antics of their clubs. They are paid to play football, thats all they shoudl do. I dont give a toss what michael owen or any other footballer thinks about the newcastle scenario. Yes, it must be tricky getting a team motivated to go out and give 100% when the bosses etc are all squabbling /acting like twats behind the scenes, but sounds like he doesn't even want to try. Great captain that
