I'm not sure how British he really was. It's complex because he didn't really grow up in the UK and was trying to become a US citizen throughout his life. I don't think he would have identified as British at all from what I read.Big fan of his Mm...Food album, but I've never bothered checking out his other stuff. Had no idea until last year he was British.
Should make some time for some more...
ah ok, did he end up living in London through compulsion rather than choice?I'm not sure how British he really was. Slick Rick also British by origin btw.
Yes, I think crazily he got stopped by immigration mid-tour or something.ah ok, did he end up living in London through compulsion rather than choice?

This podcast from Open Mike Eagle talking to Prince Paul they talk about his work with Doom and they mention the fake Doom's doing gigs. It's a great podcast talking about Prince Paul's career. The Madvillain album is a masterpiece. The JJ Doom album also has plenty of good stuff. Operation Doomsday is great. It's all good. Maybe not the best rapper ever but certainly up there with the greatest and in terms of smart lyrical wordplay I don't think many come anywhere close. He was on another level.
Regarding his nationality yes he was a UK passport holder but grew up in the USA, where he'd never been a citizen. Not sure what his visa situation was but yes apparently after a European tour in 2010 he was refused re-entry and so settled in London. It may have something to do with his reputation for sending "impersonators" to gigs over the years.
