Mexico

whoop whoopie....i'm booked 17th for two weeks...no Mexico city as too far...but i know i'll go back!!!!!;)

You could get an internal flight from Merida to Mexico City - doesn't take long. Having said that, there's loads to see around there. You can go to Chichen Itza and Palenque I reckon as well as Merida in 2 weeks

Tulum's ace. :) Whitest sand and most turquoise sea I've ever seen. I stayed there for about ten days then went to Belize. Ace part of the world. :)

Mexico is an amazing place to visit. Second a visit to Mexico City, which has loads to see and Oaxaca. Only thing I didn't really enjoy that I was expecting to was the food.

We're off to Tulum in March ourselves, after a brief stay in Mexico stay for a wedding, so more info gratefully received.

:D

Sounds fucking lush though, even if i get the impression that some of you caners spent the duration in a haze.

Clearly I'm too refined to cloud my head these days.

;)

This looks like the most recent Mexico thread to bump.

What sort of budget would I be looking at for two for two weeks.

I've found flights to Mexico City for £610 each. Thinking of staying in the city for maybe 4 days, is that enough?

Would like to go to Oaxaca, maybe up the coast to Acapulco or to Puebla and Veracruz, buses seem to be reasonable so maybe £200 between us for travel.

Could everything be done for £2k?

I just booked flights for October for £1100.

Really need any recommendations now if anyone can help. Starting with accommodation in Mexico City!

Gonna be there for Day of the Dead:cool:

I AM GOING IN SEPTEMBER. I'm ok for advice really... just going to hang out at the cantinas etc, eat a bit, go to the beach, that kind of thing.

Jealous! :D I had a great time in January. Whereabouts are you going?

Edit: I'm considering spending a week in Mexico City next January ....

Hey all,

Need some advice on weather and places to go in mexico in january. Looking at staying in playa del carmen and travlling around a bit from there, but very conflicting views on searching for weather that time of year, seems to be between 60 and 80 degrees and 5 hrs sunshine, temp ok but seems low on hrs.

Does the sun set aroun d 3pm?

Any suggestions for alternatives welcome.

cheers hx

are you fucking mad ?

what have you planned for afterwards ? a bit of windsurfing off the somali coast ? The Baghdad naked bike rally ?
The Kabul Oktoberfest ?

You can fly to Puerto Escondido and then get the bus.
But I guess if you went to PE you might as well just stay there ... it's much bigger though.

i've been to the yucatan visited Chichen Itza and uxmal as well as some other less well known spots. it was great but i kinda wish i'd know more about the plces before i went

also totally by accident i visited Chichen Itza on the solstice so i got to see the serpent

also this was before they closed of access so i got to climb the temple and go inside and see the internal temple

i want to go and see lots of hardcore punk gigs and go to cantinas mainly.

For punk stuff you really must go to the "punk market" El Chopo. It's on (or at least was when I was there) every Saturday morning. There's always bands on, sometimes good, sometimes not so (my band played there). Theres stalls and stalls of bootleg cds where you can pick up a disc with the entire output of every band imaginable. There's specialist stalls - surf, ska, anarcho-punk, oi, etc etc Food, drink, other random happennings. You''l also find out about what gigs are one from the frenzy of flyering there. It was also the scene of the infamous "emo riots". It's dead easy to get to either on the tube or the metrobus.

Cantinas? The historic centre has plenty of good ones. This recent BBC article is pretty good. La Faena was one of my faves.

Other things to see in Mexico City...Coyoacan Market on Sat or Sun is okay but a bit hippyish and touristy. The "witches market" was intriguing (I can't remember the name of it right now though), the boat trips on the canalsare a good day out.

The wrestling is worth seeing. it's all a bit trendy now, but if you avoid the Friday night show at the Arena Mexico and go instead to the Sunday afternoon one at the Coliseo its a bit more low-key and traditional.

The mariachi bars on Plaza Garibaldi are fun too, but the area is pretty edgy so be careful.

Even edgier and well worth a visit if you know a local, but probably best avoided otherwise these days is the huge "thieves market" in Tepito.

we are going to plaza garibaldi for independence day i think.... will be going to el chopo at some point for sure! i am visiting inlaws there for first time so will be hauled all over i should think, but i will only be with locals, but i might not get to do a whole lot of tourist things that i might like to do otherwise.
i hear the hardcore punk gigs are totally mental and wild. what kind of band was yuors? what name? they might know it!

Doubt it. We played mostly expat venues apart from out gig at Chopo. Also we weren't all that good. We were The Screaming Beavers. Old school punk to start and then morphed into a ska-punk band. Some ex-member formed a more succesful jazz outfit afterwards which might still be going.

Anyway here's us playing Chopo.

Remember Chopo is Saturday morning only. Not to be confused with the adjacent tourist market which is open all the time. Many a time I saw a bemused american in sandals and knee highs clutch desperately at his newly bought sombrero upon taking a wrong turn at Chopo.
