Mexican Election

The UK media wet it's collective knickers in orgiastic delight when the exact same thing happened in Ukraine.
In what ways is this situation exactly the same?

Why? Or rather: what's their excuse?

My guess is the irony and provocative nature of celebrating independence in a capital currently besieged by masses of Mexican people demanding independence from a thoroughly debased and corrupt establishment that holds them in chains, was not lost on Mexico's elite.

Also makes the PAN look good - avoiding potential confrontation, winning sympathy, rediscovering old traditions etc holding it in Dolores Hidalgo where the first "grito" was made.

Personally off to a local one in a PRD stronghold tonight. Will report back on Monday.

Oh, and they`ve anounced they`re gonna burn all the ballots.

There seems to be a contradiction in the report, between statements like this: "The campaign hopes to spend the next six years opposing the rule of Mr Calderon," and statements like this: "A government spokesman said the event was moved from Mexico City because of fears of radical groups planning violence." I suppose the opposition is split over what tactics to use?

The rumours here are that a military assault on Oaxaca is imminent.

:(

Incidentally, the Oaxaca insurgency has nothing to do with the election. They don`t support the PRD/Obrador anymore than the Zapatistas do.

Would such an assault be successful? Sounds like a risky venture to me--how would the Zapatistas or the demonstrators in DF respond?

well....as far as I can see there are no demonstrators in DF anymore. The PRD are trying to convert that movement into a tame campaign to use in future elections.

the zapatistas don`t have the military capability to do anything other than prevent an assault on their municipalities. politically they are already around the country trying to generalise movements such as their own, oaxaca and atenco.

the state has gotten away with its assault on atenco. there is no reason why it can't in oaxaca.

I hope i`m wrong.
