Metered water charges?

Yeah, I've been wondering this. My monthly water bills are about 28 quid, it's a two bed house. I bet if we were metered it wouuld be less. But then I like the fact that I don't have to worry about water. My mum's on a metered water connection and, while she may spend less, it's also psychologically not great - she spends her whole time telling people to turn off taps properly and stuff

My water is cheap but I'm one person in a flat and although I have a garden I dont pay to water it (not from my meter anyway). I'm also careful about what I use...none of this water running whilst I brush my teeth business.

I reckon any number over 2 people a water meter may not be the cheapest option. It certainly wouldn't be if you took a lot of baths or have the washing machine on twice per day.

Ok I get that.

My friend though is already very careful with water (actually she just doesn't believe that it's good for our bodies/hair etc to bath as frequently as we generally do...I largely ignore her tbf :D ) and as I say it's just her and her 9 year old daughter. They have a yard, but nothing waterable.

They probably use a fair bit less water for baths/washing than you for instance (seriously) so I'm thinking it may be worth her getting a meter reading.

Having got it reduced to half the previous demand, she doesn't want to end up paying more though (but afaic, the first amount was just completely ridiculous). Tricky. :hmm:

To be honest, the only way she's going to be able to work out what's fair and what's not in this instance is to take a meter reading and then take another one sometime later - a week might do it just to give her a rough idea of what she's actually using. The water companies have their charges on their sites don't they? She should be able to work out roughly what she should be paying. Also the water company will know of that's a normal amount for someone in their sized property with one child.

Without actually measuring what's she's using via a meter reading it's just going to be guesswork on everybodies part.
