It is quite a good album. Certainly after the total fucking mess of st.anger it is a definite step up. Obviously they're aiming for a more traditional metallica sound after the 90s 'experimentation'. Having said that, I actually really enjoyed 'Load', it was very unpopular at the time with fans, but it stands up very well now and has some really mature songwriting and fantastic songs ("Bleeding me", Outlaw Torn" et al). Reload seemed like out takes to me, though again there were some great tracks ("Fixxer", "Unforgiven 2"). Having said that, Ride the lightening / Master of Puppets / ...And Justice for All, were (IMO) the highwater mark.
Death Magnetic, from what I've heard (the 6 streaming tracks at metallica.com, I'm not going to download poor sound quality shite), is surprisingly good. But that is in the context of st. anger being so poor, and metallica not wiritng anything thrash-like in a long time. I'm not sure its as good an album as I want it to be, time will tell. It is a bit meandering at times, riffs for the sake of riffs, vocals are a bit poor, lyrics not so great and theres absolutely no vocal hooks (something the metallica of old always had). I'm also a bit dissappointed by the mix, its not as good as I would have hoped. Maybe it'll sound better on CD. I'd also say Lar's drumming is a bit weak, its a bit basic for the riffage. But having said all that, I do still think its pretty good, the best thing I can say is that after hearing it I'd like to go and see em live again, something I definitely would not have considered before; so it has restored my faith somewhat. Hopefully its a grower, so far from what I've heard - if I'm generous - I'd give it a 7/10 (which is much better than I expected).
