Metallica's new album: Death Magnetic

i tried downloading the whole album via torrent.
but there are a load of fakes.
and i'm wondering if lars is monitoring these sites...

and did anyone see metallica on BBC3?
so embarrasing. they were still playing stuff from 91.

also caught 'some kind of monster' on tv.
saw the last quarter - pretty good documentary...

Some Kind of Monster is genius. James obv has major demons but comes across by and large a decent and reformed person. Lars doesn't seem to give a shit about his so-called best friend and is a walking ego spouting crap in the third person. Kirk is Kirk - great guitar player with an personality so at odds with heavy metal it's hysterical but also spouts new age crap. And Dave Mustaine makes Lars well up with some home truths :D

The point that they've never been the same since Cliff died is probably true, as good a bassist as Jason was. The original dynamic was lost and never returned.

I was there at Reading. It was a wierd vibe. For a start it wasn't very loud, plusthere were no metal heads or goths or anything. Just the usual school leavers crowd. Which compared to when Metallica played in '97 or whenever it was, was very odd.

Still, for my money they were better than Rage Against The machine with a so-rehearsed set there was no room for off the cuff remarks, or any fun on stage. At least Metallica do the crowd chanting and random chat per gig.

They played a set which stuck to what the crowd at a festival would want to hear, I enjoyed it.

The sound on the main stage was dodgy all weekend though.

ouch...what a mediocre to shit metalli-track.

sounds like they're trying to return to 1984.

wish they died in that bus crash of 1987. with cliff as the only survivor.

You really think their music would have been that much different if Cliff had survived?

You can't keep playing the same rebellious and energetic sort of stuff like Kill 'Em All when you're hitting your 50's. At least they're making new music unlike some bands at their age who only do comeback tours every now and again.

I don't and in fact have never really felt Metallica died with Cliff. I think what really made me fall out of love with the music was their idiotic reaction to Napster and how they treated Jason (which led to him leaving)...

init. I always liked Jason too and the way they treated him was unforgivable.

Robert Trujillo is a good guy and a great bass player but it's an altogether different Metallica now imho.

Lol at

i think they were progressive in their way up until Master of Puppets.
there's an eerie sound to that album and it's the only Metallica album i have on my ipod.
each track is beautiful.
great build-ups and the lyrics are still cutting - even to this day...

i grew up listening to them and it bothers me that they haven't aged as well as say, Iron Maiden or Slayer...

i not written an album review ever - so here goes.

in summary, the forthcoming metallica album is less fun than the days of Kill 'em All / Ride the Lightning but it's a vast improvement of disappointing crap from the 90s...definitely a step in the right direction...

the riffs are tight with lots of complex interchanges - the sacrafice for a more technical sound is that it becomes less melodic - so fans expecting a complete return to vintage will be disappointed.
opening track 'That was your Life' is above average. on first listen, i thought, 'wow, fuck yeah. the tempo and production is well fresh n' bloody - kinda like a slayer record.
then came 'The End of the Line' and that blew me away. some seriously riffing that would even put mustaine's best work to shame.

'The Day that Never Comes' is fantastically shit. i can see why it was a single cos this and 'Unforgiven III' are the sort of commericial crap that can be aired on MTV.
Metallica need to stop thinking commercial!

'All Nightmare Long' stood out for me but i'll probably be bored of this pretty soon.
and what the fuck is up with The Judas Kiss? i swear i heard Leper Messiah!

if Master of Puppets was 9/10.
and the Black album scored 6/10.

Death Magnetic deserves a 7.

ETA - the last track, My Apocalypse, that is so Slayer!
rick has done a great job on thos.

okay - just gave this album 3 further listens.
it's defo a grower and the best thing they've released since cliff's death!!
only two bum tracks - as already mentioned.

Broken, Beat & Scarred is a possible single.

i'm actually loving Death Magnetic.

revised my score.
i now give it 8/10.

I heard Broken, Beat & Scarred earlier and thought it was a bit boring tbh...and what the hell is Unforgiven 3 about? It doesn't have the signature riff in it...

it's a technical record.
no anthems.
forget For Whom The Bell Tolls or MOP.
more like kill em all mixed with Master and pinch of Slayer/Megadeth influences..

Yeah I kinda got that from the five tracks I've heard. Bit of a shame really because melody is as much a part of Metallica's music as the heavyness and fastness.

where did you get the tickets?
i'm trying to buy now but it appears you have to join their fan club first...

I signed up to missionmetallica.com ages ago, you can do that for free.

The "proper" fan club got 1st priority, then the "platinum mission metallica" members, then on wednesday some got released to non-paying members. Had to wait for a code from the metallica site, then onto ticketmaster.

I'd be very surprised if there any left tbh.
