Merseyside Pc, & BNP member sacked.

That doesnt answer my points. Firstly, its questionable that he joined the BNP. Secondly, its questionable whether the ban on officers joining the BNP is even legal - given the fact that the BNP is not a banned organization and is in all other respects (even down to the party political broadcasts) a legitimate political party. The amendment to regulations mentioned in your first link is so incredibly badly worded as to give the Secretary of State carte blanche to ban police officers from being members of anything.

Wifey joined the whole family up. If he doesn't know what's going on in his own family, he's hardly fucking competent to police the wider community.

BNP, NF, and Combat 18 are prohibited for the police by legislation. If the OB don't like the law, they're not best placed to enforce the law. lol

A copper getting fucked over because of an abuse of legal powers and disregard for due process. I'd call that poetic justice myself. :)

The list is a big 'so what' really. Interesting to see who's on it. But the list and members isn't that big.

If his wife joined him up without his knowledge then he should not have been fired, and also those groups are not banned by legislation - they are banned by order of the Secretary of State, who is allowed by regulations to ban any group, for any reason, that he or she deems.

Do you think its appropriate for the Secretary of State to have that power?

1) he's a copper, and
2) it's the BNP, so
3) I don't give a fuck.

Either the OB agree and uphold with the law, or not

Whether you and Bettley agree with the law or not is a matter for you.

I'm not keen on the OB upholding/policing just the bits that they personally agree upon :)

Its not the law though, either in terms of regulations, or in terms of whether it would stand up under European legislation.

It is the law. The Police Regulations 2003 were amended to be quite specific in this respect.

Membership of BNP, NF, and Combat18 are specifically prohibited for the OB. Whether that's right or not is a different matter.

What are you getting worked up over here?

He's either completely BNP with his family, or he's a dimwit and incompetently policing in the wider community. It's not rocket science.

It is not specifically prohibited by legislation - from your links:

These Regulations amend the Police Regulations 2003 to extend the restrictions on the private lives of members of police forces. In particular, they provide that a member of a police force may not be a member of an organisation which is specified or described in a determination of the Secretary of State.

I have emboldened the relevant parts. As I said above, nowhere in the regulations does it say what organizations are or are not banned - it is dependent on the whim of the Secretary of State.

As for whether thats right or not, surely that is the matter at hand here - this bloke has lost his job, his pension and (thanks to the publicity and the utterly messed up nature of the economy at present) probably any hope of any career subsequent to this solely because it appears his wife signed him up to a political party which is not illegal, which has elected councillors and which has national party political broadcasts.

I could understand this if he was a member of C18, or if he was racist or discriminatory, or even if he was active in the BNP politically - but there doesnt appear to be any evidence produced in any of the reports that he was anything other than a name on a list. Thats why I am annoyed by this.

What you didn't embolden was that this particular Home Office Circular was specifically provided for in the legislation i.e. the Secretary for State can and did specifically name the organisations prohibited and circulate it to all the forces ... BNP, NF and Combat 18.

I've got no sympathy for him.

Well yes, but the same power gives the Secretary of State the ability to ban police officers from being members of the Black Police Association, the Police Federation, the Conservative Party, the Bala Lake Railway Society, and indeed any other organization he or she deems inappropriate for a police officer to join.... and this case suggests that being signed up by a family member to one of those groups is enough to get you fired.

Quite. But the Secretary of State hasn't. Just those three. Not confusing except for the terminally inept, which he appears to be. Or an active supporter attempting to wriggle out of it.

I dont think they were behind this - though the likes of Dizaei would probably have exploited it if he wasnt kicked out.

I agree, but there's a big difference between spouting an opinion that exploits a situation and actually having influence over it, as the troll claims the BPA did.
