Mercury Prize 2009

the horrors looked quite good too, had a bit about them. altho quite what a mercury version of hip hop actually is is another matter perhaps?!

well quite - sometimes they do stick their necks out, but very rarely
the only other hip hop act to win was miss dynamite and she might have been a bit safe but that's it really. bit much to say that there's any formulaic approach.

look at the winners over the, what, 20 years?, and see how much Dizzee stands out.

Had to be a proper reaction to last year.

Tbf, I don't get a lot of time for new music so I've come to use Mercury a bit like the Booker - a listening list. Seems like a reliable souce, not too bothered who wins.

Always glad to see south London do well, though.

@ Pootle:

Yeah but no. I get Kate Bush far more from Bat For Lashes (along with Tori Amos).
F+tM has much more, I dunno how to describe it, verve. The whole drumming thing for example. Not wispy.

Same here, on all of those counts.

F+M were whiny rubbish tbh. i've got an 18y/o daughter if i need an emo-mo in my life thanks....

well i didn't like it much anyhoo...

:D only joking, i wouldn't know what emo was, it sounded goth to me but i was trying to hide my age tbf....

Oh ok! :)
(Far too life-affirming to be goth though. Sorry, I am proselytising now. I should stop, it's getting embarrassing.)

Heads up to the Speech Debelle congratulators - she's playing at the Scala on October 7th for a bargainous £10

To be fair all the nominess were pretty shit, like most years...I like the Horrors album but it's also flawed. Florence and the Machine are dire, La Roux piss poor, Friendly Fires are okay, sort of. Speech Debelle...it's totally inoffensive fluff dressed in 'urban' attire.

The important thing is that neither La Roux nor Glasvegas won it.

Anyone see the 'performance' clip of La Roux last night? That girl's voice sounds like me singing falsetto only I've got a hangover and probably bronchitis or something. Fucking rubbish.
