Mercury Prize 2009

this list sums up my feeling about the state of music in Britain at the mo - great to see so many non-trad-pop acts doing their thing in a post-TOTP world, but I think the quality is really low at present. All the action is in the more obscure fringes, and even there things are interesting rather than classic. NOt such a bad thing on the whole, but it makes award ceremonies as relevant as charts. Especially the LP format is suffering it would seem.

.. the Rural Juror

hey el jefe, have you seen rural juror? great movie! hope your feeling better

there's a lot of good hiphop and drumnbass from britain making the mainstream. probably more than ever. the mercury prize used to give props to it and probably helped the scene a lot before it blew up

that wouldn't be so bad if they were trying to promote newer stuff that still needed a break in the mainstream, but they are just promoting stuff that's over promoted anyway

i agree with this. i'd love to see a mercury prize full of total unknowns. but that wouldn't get them any press would it?

perennial question, then: what should have been on the list that wasn't?

nah, but i still rate a lot of those albums that were in the lists back in the day, and they weren't all indie

roni size = new forms
pulp - different class
primal scream - screamadelica
tricky - maxinequaye
prodigy - jilted generation

i don't think all of them even won and i'd still listen to all of them

I had a look at the list of winners earlier, and thought that Portishead's "Dummy" was the best winner they've had, with Primal Scream, Badly Drawn Boy, PJ Harvey and Dizzee getting the runners up spot in no particular order.

Rabbit Heart
Dog Days Are Over
Kiss With a Fist

Start with those.

Hmmm - kind of late 80s early 90s thing going on with some of it.

It's ok, I suppose. Not my kind of thing. Though Dog Days Are Over was my fave of that little bunch on a first listen.

Or start by listening to something good. Like 'stinging nettle' by Led Bib. All of you, go on. It's on spotify and everything, just a couple of clicks away. There'll be plenty of time for mediocre warblings when you're dead, listen to something interesting instead. At least half of you will hate it but hate is so much more fun than indifference :)

You sound like a patronising knob so I don't think I'll bother.

I went looking for it but I saw the word 'jazz' . . .

Did they just print out the 6music playlist and nominate them?

:D

No wonder, unlike previous years, I know so many of them. 6 is my station of choice. :)

I'd probably choose Friendly Fires over La Roux. Although Elly should get a special award for being the first ever pop singer to correctly pronounce 'Not' whilst singing. I find it oddly endearing.

I was suprised Micachu wasn't nominated. "Jewellery" has really grown on me. It basically sounds how I always expected the music of people like Bat for Lashes and Florence & the Machine to sound from how mainstream music journos write about them (ie eccentric, inventive, experimental pop music. Funny noises but tunes too).

Ditto what other people said regarding the Horrors. It's the only album on that list I rate. And it's still only alright.

Anyone know who is on the panel? Apart from Simon Frith? Because the panel presumably have to sit and listen to the, what, 600ish entries, right? I find it hard to believe that a bunch of people who earn their crust from music in one way or another genuinely thought those were actually the best.

I reckon I'd end up finding a better bunch of albums just walking into a record shop with a blindfold on and grabbing stuff at random. In fact it'd save a lot of money and effort if that's what they did. They could televise that instead - it might even be funny, especially if they put obstacles in the way.

My Mercury list would be:

"Jewellery" Micachu
"Life Echoes" Mick Beck (the token jazz entry. well, the token free improv solo bassoon album entry)
"Old Stories" Nancy Wallace (the token folk entry)
"Eternal Embers" Jason Steel (er, the other token folk entry)

Yes, it's very good. Very original, perhaps it would have faired better back in the day and got a nomination. It should be interesting to see how far her career goes. It's certainly one of those albums that has Mercury written all over it... at least in days gone by.

Is that Speech DeBelle album any good? She's on Big Dada right?

Think I heard one of her tracks on the wireless a few months ago and it sounded quite good.

Yeah, she is on Big Dada. She's good y'know. She's more real than Ms Dynamite, kinda like a link between Roots Manuva and Mike Skinner. Very beautiful stuff with rapping over acoustic guitar and drums. And she's a South London girl.

Simon Frith, chair of judges, said this year's list reflected a revolution in the music industry that was enabling artists – and women in particular – to break free of the confines of a record label.
