At tonight's supporters' forum, Hak stated that he expects to retain "8 or 9" of this season's players, and intends working with a smaller squad. Obviously he didn't name any names, as negotiations will be ongoing while players consider any contract offers. It was also remarked upon from the floor that we had quite a lot of older players. I'd already checked up on the existing squad, listed below with ages in brackets, and of the 24 players registered at the end of the season 11 were over 30, with 4 more who will turn 30 during next season. Hak acknowledged this, then remarked that he'd been talking to a potential new recruit today who is "an older player"! He immediately touched on the number f goals we've conceded this season, saying it wasn't good enough and we needed to get that figure down from 72 conceded in the league to around half that figure. (I notice Gavin Hoyte, a defender who was a key figure in Hak's Maidstone National South champions, has just been released after 150 appearances for them. He was club captain and will be 34 in June.) Hak also mentioned that he'd tried to sign a player who lives at Peckham last season, but he went to Hornchurch instead for double what we were offering.
Last year we issued a retained and released list on 27th May, although a few players announced their own departures before that, or had already been announced as new signings by their next club. We didn't start announcing new signings until 4th June, so I don't expect to hear much for another 4 weeks or so. Obviously we already know Mark Ricketts has departed. Roarie Deacon's loan from Havant will have expired, but he's a decent dead ball specialist who can cover several positions and played for Hak at Maidstone, so I would think he is a potential new signing.
