Men's Squad 2024/25

And a week after returning to running, Ross Marshall and Ralfi Hand are now unlikely to feature again this season.
I suspect that means unlikely to play for the club again. At least Max Hudson could return next week. I thought he really blossomed during February, which was probably our best month of the season.

Hassan Ibrahiym confirmed as having left in the match preview for tomorrow.

For those not wanting to link through to X, from Hassan Ibrahiym:

“I want to clarify that I did not leave @DulwichHamletFC, was told that it’s not likely I’ll be playing. I made it clear I wanted to stay and fight for the club, but that wasn’t an option. I was forced out. Then it’s been made out that I left. Wish the club all the best 👊🏾

Another one to add to the list of people who feel they’ve been messed around by the club.

Non contract player leaves club is not really a story and I’d hardly call that messed around, just told not required. The club won’t ever respond to comments from players so you’ll only get one viewpoint, but non playing squad members don’t usually play for free.

Absolutely get there’s two-sides to every story, and don’t expect the club to respond - but also can’t really recall similar public reactions in the past, and it’s not like social media is a new thing.

So whilst it might just be players / staff are more comfortable putting that kind of reaction out there, also possible that the conduct of the club has changed. No smoke without fire and all that.

Players are treated very well and in accordance with any rules/contracts/agreements made. Just because a player wants to stay doesn’t mean the club has to allow them. Non contract players can be released at any time and he has been. That’s all it is

Let’s just say that the player’s view can be easily disputed but it’s not worth it. He wasn’t available to play for us or anyone else. I’ll leave him to say why.

Last year we issued a retained and released list on 7th May, with Lorenzo Lewis the first new signing announced on 15th May, but obviously we have a new manager this time so I'm not sure how it will work. Will Mark Dacey start completely from scratch? Will he be evaluating the list of players we had at the end of the season and possibly offering new terms to a few of them? (I can't believe we'll keep many.) I did notice that Mark has worked for Kinetic Academy in the past, which is presumably a sort of Aspire Academy type team, although I've no idea whether it has any formal link to a club. Ralfi Hand played for them before joining Charlton, so is he already acquainted with Mark, and if so could there be a possible incentive for them to work together? Ralfi began to look like another Alfie Allen when the wheels fell off, and although he was reported injured I got the impression Brad didn't fancy him after initially picking him to start his first game at Billericay, but he's got a lot of technical ability and considerable potential.

This is the squad we were left with when the season ended:

Josh Adepoju
Dillon Barnes
Jerome Binnom-Williams
Sean Bonnett-Johnson
David Bremang
Michael Chambers
Ralfi Hand
Kaya Hansson
Max Hudson
Anthony Jeffrey
Alfie Marigliani
Mark Marshall
Ross Marshall
Ben Mason
Danny Mills
Chris Petrou
George Porter
Louis Ramsay
Ryley Scott
Luke Wanadio
Aaron Williams-Bushell
Jordan Wynter

Amaru Kaunda (loan expired)
Arj Krasniqi (loan expired)
Kresh Krasniqi (confirmed departure)
Lorenzo Lewis (to Ashford United)

My tuppence on who I'd like to see kept, purely from my three pints and pie/souvlaki view from the toilets opposite sideline, with no view as to what formation the new boss will favour:
  • Luke and AJ - top goalscorer for the past couple of seasons, and probably our best chance creator. I think both can play further forward as needed.
  • Chambers. I know there's been discussions on here about his limitations, but I think he's great, and seems like a very nice guy.
  • Mills. His legs are properly gone now, but if we can keep him as an impact sub and a coach/mentor, he still causes panic amongst opposition and understands the club and fans.
  • Ramsay and Hudson. Both had injuries, but I was very impressed with both's work in both fullback and wingbacks this year. Hudson also has a very nice delivery on him.
  • Mason. Seemed a class act as a CB in a 3 or a FB as required.
  • Scott. I think he lived off that run he had in 23/24 where he looked like Lampard III, but I'd still like to see him stay, but not as captain.
  • Wynter, SBJ, Mark Marshall. I don't think we need all of these to stay, and the latter two are getting on a bit, but these are glue players who have good attitudes and can play in a number of positions (less SBJ there).

Everyone else I'd be less bothered if they are back than not. The one exception is JBW who I really think needs to go. He became a parody of himself towards the end of the season, trying Marseille turns around the opposition box. I doubt discipline is going to come at this stage of his career, and having this year's captain on the books implies he's starting. Hopefully Hak gets another job somewhere and calls on him again.

I'll be staggered if Scott is still with us next season. I don't think I'm blowing any great secrets when I say he wasn't absolutely desperate to stay last summer (hence why he resigned so late.)

No great loss if he goes. Struggle to think of anything of note that he did all season.

Can't comment on this season, but saw him several times last season. I think there's a good player in there. He's certainly very well rounded - he's pretty good at everything and as mentioned above his runs into the box sometimes are a bit Lampard-esque.

I think the biggest concern I'd have with him is the amount of times he's injured. I'm always a bit suspicious of players who are regularly injured, particularly if they know they're not going to be there next season, so I'm not sure if there was any lead swinging or if he is just very prone to knocks and strains. If it is the latter, I'd say he would find the going hard in the Conf South where the football was noticeably more physical than the Isthmian Prem.

I can’t remember who mentioned this before, but pretty sure someone raised it previously - the difference in training and conditioning for players dropping down levels, especially for older players.

Mark Ricketts as an example - older player, coming from a near-full time environment where he was still able to play regularly. Drops down to our level, training a couple of times a week, and suddenly has a load of niggles and injuries that keep him off the pitch.

Obviously difficult to say from the outside what the true causes of player unavailability have been - it might just have been a very bad year, or bad timing - but Ross Marshall, Jordan Wynter, Binnom-Williams could seem to fit that profile.

I thought Ricketts said in that final interview that he was fit for the most of the season. He wasn't picked and everyone assumed it was niggles. I could be wrong, I'd have to check what he said, but I thought that was the bombshell dropped in his final chat.

I don't remember that but it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think he played that much in his final playing season at Borehamwood. Maybe it was a Hak thing to use the oldest veterans sparingly, as Mark Marshall didn't often start until the change of manager, whereas Brad was picking him at wing back for every game and he looked as fit as anyone.

Incidentally Ricko played for our team in the charity game against Royal Engineers at Chatham last weekend. Don't Slow Down said he looked extremely fit!
