No it isn't, it's heritage is entirely indo-european, came over from the Hindu Kush (mentioned in the Rig Veda too!) with the tribes that became the "Celts", fuck all to do with those aniseed-sucking bubbles, it just spread there as the Indo-European tribes made their way past. :p
 
I fancy trying some.. Is there a particular one to go for? Do they have it in supermarkets or is it best buying online? I don't want to go too expensive, but nothing nasty due to cheapness either. Do you have to drink the bottle in a couple of sittings like normal wine or does it keep longer?

I had a bottle of recently, was made by Lyme Bay Mead, fairly good and typical.
 
I'm a big mead fan. Love the stuff. Sadly all that sugar does me in (type 2) and I get pissed far far too quickly.

A pub I (normally) go to does mulled mead in winter. Gorgeous stuff.
 
I'm quite a fan of mead.

Definitely an acquired taste, and some has been downright nasty, with a metallic or sour taste.
That must be the result of whatever weird plants the bees had been visiting ...

Out of the several I've tried, I think I liked Lindisfarne the most.
I haven't had any for a couple of years ...

Having been reminded / inspired by this thread re-appearing, I think I'll celebrate my second jab with some.

We were talking about it in the context of the spring equinox (tomorrow) and it being a druid sort of drink. Although maybe that's just in my head.
 
I've been thinking about this chilli mead stuff, and while I would guzzle down a bottle if it were given to me, not sure that I'd buy any. What I'm going to do though is next time I have mead in stock I'll do an experimental mead cocktail with some hot sauce.
