On this question though wouldn't this be the time to let the grassroots locals pick their own candidate rather than have some party celeb be foisted on them as has happened far too many times of late with Labour?

Hundreds of reasons, first being that corbyn won the leadership promising more membership control of the party - parachuting a prominent supporter into the first vacant seat would be idiotic.

he's from the north west. he's an articulate, telegenic and visible supporter of corbyn, and, it would mean less of his columns in the guardian. it's a win/win for all concerned.
