McFly Doing A 'Who' Cover

I wonder if fans of James Brown, Eddie Cochran & Marvin Gaye were similarly perturbed when The Who covered them ...

It sounds unbelievable. I am still trying to decide whether I loathe/loathed pop/punk bands like McFly and the late and unlamented Busted less or more than the average boy or girl bands.

I'd like to see the stupid little boys play at Reading. The heavens would rain urine. :D

why are they "stupid little boys"? they are making a career & oodles of cash out of something they obviously enjoy. and throwing piss at people just because you don't like the music they make is a bit pathetic if you ask me.

Aren't one of Busteds ex-members new band playing Reading this year? Could be wrong, but I wouldn't like to be standing at the front of that stage if they are. For various reasons.

Because they're talentless and pointless, being a watered-down, ultra-commercialised version of an artform which should be about more than simply selling records.

Throwing piss at overhyped artists is just about the only way that music fans can express their displeasure and make them look stupid .... hence the way that 50 Cent and The Rasmus got rained on at Reading last year.

So paying gawd knows however much it is to get into reading and then throwing pints of piss at the turns is a way of making them look stupid.

talentless? no, they can sing, they can play their instruments, they make a harmless enough noise. dunno if they write their songs, don't really care to be honest.

pointless? no - people - lots of people, like them. i wouldn't even say that jamiroquai is pointless, and i can't stand him.

yes they are "commercial" in the fact that they are a mass-markerted and promoted band. but so what? that doesn't make the music they make any less valid as music. you may find it bland and watered-down, fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion. but just because you don't like them doesn't make them talentless and "pointless."

or maybe if you find someone overhyped you could just not go and see them and just not buy their records?

as Pigeon suggests, it's the people throwing the piss who are the stupid ones.

Yawn...wank wank this should be banned...wank wank they're destroying my youth...wank wank

1. You don't have to buy the fucking record
2. If you're that much of a 'muso' why watch CD:UK full stop since it's full of talentless pop-shite by defintion...
3. They've got success, money and groupies, you haven't. Hurt much?

mcfly shoulod neevr be mentioned in the same breath as the who or the buzzcocks...argument over
I'm having trouble seeing you actually arguing there. Arguing, in my eyes, means each side has to state their opinions and explain why they disagree. I stated and explained my statement; you merely growlled in near-illiterate English a totally unexplained statement. I never actually said that McFly are as good as the Who or the Buzzcocks, merely that their style has certain parallels. Now explain why it doesn't.

I must say I'm surprised by the explosion of rockism on U75 here. Pop music is an art form which is often carefully crafted to produce something very clever. Busted were and McFly are fun. Remember fun? I imagine we all quite like it. Fun is something the current indie dirge containing Coldplay, Keane, etc will never be, yet that doesn't seem to get the vented anger McFly have for some unknown reason. As for them playing Reading, Daphne & Celeste did and the snobby wankers bottled them off because they were unprepared to look outside their blinkered views.

I didn't go to Reading to see The Rasmus or 50 Cent. So I didn't pay to see them - I paid to see the whole festival which contained a number of excellent acts. And I haven't bought their records, or McFly's or Busted's.

My personal view is that throwing piss at an artist you loathe is a way to express your contempt of what they stand for .... whether it be 50 Cent's tiresome "I'm a gangsta, guns are great, let's hump my bitches" bollocks, the number of crows which die to make up the Rasmus lead singer's ridiculous 'look' or the insufferable smugness of McFly and Busted.

You're making the mistake of assuming that I'm asserting that rock=good and pop=bad. There's no shortage of bad rock bands out there and a lot of very inventive pop acts. What I'm objecting to is the huge number of identikit pop acts out there that are cut and shaped according to a formula, and the fact that there are now 'rock' acts like McFly and Busted who are cut from the same cloth, except with guitars.

so do you go around throwing bottles of piss at everyone whose opinions and attitude you disgaree with? or for that matter people who you perceive to be smug? or at those who's image you don't like? or is it only those people who stand up on stage in front of you that have little chance of actually fighting back that you think are fair game?

mcfly need to learn what the overdrive channel on there pretty marshall amps does.

The bloke plays an explorer(sometimes anyway) with no distortion thats just plain rude.

Nirvana had pop sensibilities mcfly are just shite

"Were'nt prepared to look outside their blinkered views"?

What the fuck? They were shit!

These sell-out pop groups deserve all the shit they get for sucking corporate cock. Their cover versions denegrate and tar the original.

Will Youngs' massacre of "Light My Fire" was not only bad because he had turned it into a warblefest, it was also bad because he had turned a legendary, rough and ragged tune by an anti-establishment band into coffee-house crooner cod-soul.

and what formula do busted and mcfly fit into then? "a few lads with guitars and drums making rock music"....hmm, that's never been done before has it? the impression i get is that mcfly and busted would all be doing the same thing even if they weren't "pop" acts. the fact that charlie from busted has carried on with another, less hyped, less "marketed" band shows that. they enjoy making music, they get signed, the record company gives them a bit of polish and puts them in smash hits....so what, fair play to them.

although intrestingly busted/mcfly shared the same managmeant company and stylists.

while they probbaley would be in bands i think fightstar(cahrlies shiity mtv emo band)prooves that maybe they wouldn't be doing quite the same stuff.

For what its worth - and this all just an opinion from someone who listens to 'serious' rock music with guitars:

Mcfly and Busted have some pretty cool fucking singles...

But Fightstar are boring and shite.
