McDonalds

Its one of the most negative things about Urban sometimes. Too many people seem to be very narrow minded thinking they are smarter and more radical than other people and then getting upset whenever there world view is questioned.

it is heartening to know i am not alone in these thoughts.

it actually makes it easier for me to not get upset and therefore respond in a really unhelpful way (i can go off the deep end at times).

i guess its the nature of the beast when you have people that feel so passionate about their beliefs

and passion is never a bad thing (unless it isnt with your partner, then it can be really bad)

I think some companies have a worse record than others though. And McDonalds,Nestle,Coca Cola and Nike are ones i try and avoid.

all american :(

and in my defence, i have never had mcD, gave up nestle products after the babymilk scandle (was that true? i dont know, but i dont like my profession being misused, even if its fractionally true). cant help but be a coke head (read into that what you will!) and nike dont cut it, im a karrimor/brashers boy :p

i also steer clear (no pun intended) of shell/bp/esso, but i need fuel and i have no real idea or even control over where sainsburys actually get their diesel from

ethically shopping isnt always 100% compatible with living, well not in my world anyway, i do what i can when i can

In 2004 Sainsbury's struck a deal with BP and it is believed they now supply all of Sainsbury's fuel.

I don't understand the popularity of Mcdonalds. It is just a beefburger in a bun with some chips that are too thin. I prefer a bacon roll or sandwich and a cup of tea in an ordinary cafe. I suppose the bacon may have come from Denmark, but even if it is local British bacon I guess the pigs are living in a space cleared of woodland. Although free range pigs would probably prefer to grub around under beech trees in a wood.

Most of the English woodland - which covered most of the country was destroyed hundreds of years ago to provide timber to build ships to create and defend the Empire (The old Hearts of Oak) and to burn for charcoal as well as construct buildings with. I don't suppose anyone thought about the future of that woodland. Or maybe they did but it was not recorded.

In Brazil and Argentina the clearing is being done on a massive and faster scale and this time the damage to the environment is known about. The loss of oxygen to the atmosphere is critical and the effect on rainfall and climate generally will be dramatic and on a world wide scale.

mcdonnalds help poor people in brazil to use there land for agreculture and earn a living so i wanna know whats wrong with me getting a bacon and egg mcmuffin on my way to college each day?

Is there a McDonalds rep that goes around buying individual cows for slaughter from Brazilian smallholders, thereby helping "poor people in brazil to use there land for agreculture and earn a living"?

I thought their meat came from big ranches owned by corporations and that it wouldn't improve the lot of poor Brazilians that much even if they cut down every last tree in the country to provide more ranchland.

what i want to know is why is mcdonnalds paying the brazillians to farm for them wrong? when we were de foresting our land so we could become a sucessfull developed nation we didnt have a bunch of people telling us we shouldent so why do people here feel they have the right to do that to them? if people feel so strongly about there not being enough forest why no re forest there own countries? mcdonnalds help poor people in brazil to use there land for agreculture and earn a living so i wanna know whats wrong with me getting a bacon and egg mcmuffin on my way to college each day?
i thought you said that you wanted to show the superiority of your ideas. you've quite some way to go to turn that ambition into reality

nothing. absolutely nothing. don't listen to the people who may tell you that constantly walking through the golden arches will lead you to see the pearly gates before your time. carry on eating mcdonalds - in fact, why not make it your sole source of food?

Nestle aren't American - they're Swiss, and plainly proud to display their European origins, judging from the way their products all over the world have an accent over the last 'e' in the logo.

indeed my bad, but then the swiss are odd too and live off nazi gold and they all have assault rifles

might as well be american

Are you by any chance trying to fatten him up so that you can use his liver to make some sort of internet foie gras?

Everybody having assault rifles sounds American, but odd people rich from plundered treasures sounds more British - maybe Switzerland should be relocated to the mid-Atlantic.

nah, the british were rich but we had to pay the americans to come and join in the fight for a free world

now we're more like a start up company... paying out more than we have coming in

sorry I went a bit overboard. I apologise to George. Sorry.

im not going to accept your apology because i think your only apologising to alleviate your feelings of guilt and you deserve your feelings of guilt for calling me a troll

so there

And at the same time, don't collude in the destruction of rare natural habitats, exploitation and human rights abuses that McD are committing?

You missed his point. On the way to becoming successful economies, your country and mine [well, not mine so much;)] deforested, destroyed ecosystems etc. Now it seems, we're happy to tell some other developing country, not to do the same thing.

They [the developing country] interpret it as us not wanting them to become successful, and therefore, possible competitors.

ok i take everything i said back, if this isnt a windup (which the "so there" bit makes me hope it is)

then its a troll

i think its just economics that drives mcd's buys its 'beef' (i use the term loosely) from south americaaaa. no policitcs, just cheaper to slash and burn than raise cattle on comparitively expensive us/european farms

Leaving aside the sourcing of meat, the cunts display spectacularly bad labour practise

are you sure?

its basically completely unqualified work yet they pay above the minimum wage,

they have to comply with employment laws the same as any company

shift leaders get paid more than the equivalently qualified nhs care asst i am told (by a care asst who left the nhs to work in mcd's)

and they pay overtime (more than many companies with their toil policies)

i aint working for them mind!

the ranches have brazzilans working on them tho presumably?

who would be employing them if mcdonalds wernet?

anyway
Brazilian deforestation is strongly correlated to the economic health of the country: the decline in deforestation from 1988-1991 nicely matched the economic slowdown during the same period, while the rocketing rate of deforestation from 1993-1998 paralleled Brazil's period of rapid economic growth.
