I guess he was the best realistic home-grown "talent" after a mixture of the FA/press had managed to fuck up Hiddink, O'Neill and Scolari. It came down to McClaren, Curbs or Allardyce.
Should have been Brooking & Pearce combination. Brooking as manager/director, Pearce as coach/motivator.
O'Neil total non-starter, but would have solved Englands hooligan problems because noone would have gone anymore.
