McCain Versus Obama

mears

a secular Republican
So it looks like we have it set up now. It will be a tough race and the usual battlegrounds will be in play. Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Florida etc...

I think John McCain will appeal more to the white, independent voters who play a pivotal part in the aforementioned states.

I look for John McCain to be the next US president.

Obama still has appeal to white voters - but it tends to be the more highly educated white voters. What does that tell you? As the US economy continues to tank, there will be a trickle-down of common sense as reality dawns.

And McCain doesn't even have the full support of his own party, who normally fall lock-step behind their leader. In the last few primaries he couldn't get above 80% of the Republican vote - even though he was the only candidate!

I'm with McCain and Bush

Same auld mears, same auld shite.

I think as it looks now McCain will win by a slight margin.

Obama won't get full support from his party either. Just how many will protest will depend on how ugly this crash is with Hillary come the day she bows out. Obama will be forced to find a vice-pres candidate from the Clinton camp in DC. The BLT stuff will hurt Obama in a general election so will the other dirt that has come up recently.

A mate of mine knows a lot more about US politics than me, always follows the elections and the processes before, understands all that electoral college shite, the demographics etc. etc. and he's in no doubt right now that McCain will be the next president. This was during a time when according to our media Obama was looking like a good bet, so it gave me pause (he's not a right-winger in the least, btw).

Either way, I think it will be business as usual for the US afterwards, though.

I think Obama will struggle against McCain, definitely - though McCain's pretty old and grumpy so maybe Obama will be able to goad him into a public explosion sometime that'd turn voters off. Suggesting a statue of Ho Chi Minh on the National Mall might do it...

It's going to be interesting to see how McCain handles his campaign. He most likely will portray himself as the experienced wise old owl and make Obama look like the naive kid still wet behind the ears. The closer we get to November the more pressure Obama will feel simply for being a junior politician and whatever world events might take place that could boost McCain's reputation as a leader. Obama has recently shown the effects of negative media pressure. It amazes me that Obama with all his charisma and speaking talents is said to not be a very good debater and not able to handle attacks or be a good attacker.

I still see McCain as being vulnerable though. It isn't a free ride. He's got to not fuck up like having a medical emergency or something.

Is there a third candidate?

What are the criteria for standing for President?

There will be loads, there always are. Including Green, Libertarian, socialist etc candidates.

Of course only two have a real chance of winning, occasionally a third party candidate will cause a stir, like Ralph Nader or Ross Perot.

Are they so tribal in the States about their political parties? I ask because you'd have thought that the worst president in history for 8 years would mean an automatic win for the Democrats, but it doesn't seem so.

Ohhhhhhhhhh yes.

I can't really see how McCain might possibly win though. The Republican machine seems appallingly disorganised and divided compared to the last election, the war is four years' less popular and large numbers of people are experiencing direct economic distress. And it was close the _last_ time. I would be interested to see arguments here.

Those that get their news and media from Fox and little else may just have a slightly different perspective to the rest of us

probably...but that would be the 3rd term of Prez Bush and I think many Americans are sick of that shit. So you never know.

I always told everyone that a black man would become president of the US before a white woman....

Uh look like we've forgotten how un-republican and un-Bush McCain has been.

Only as far as Republicans are concerned. That is part of the point. He was briefly the darling of the anti-war mainstream for being military but saying "wait, this is crap" but that was years ago, it was beaten out of him, and he's made sure that he appears nowhere near that now.

We'll see if I'm right (I think), I think it's pandering. He can't afford for conservatives on the far right to sit this one out.

You mean, McCain pandering to the far right? Sure, he is, but that just won't win it. It turns off the floaters, particularly the "floating-but-not-happy-with-the-war" people. It also turns off the more technocratic, centrist Republicans who don't agree with the war but don't really want to vote Dem - all that "we'll stay for a thousand years" stuff, it looks bad. And the far Christian Right don't believe him anyway.

I think Obama will get the nomination and the Presidency. The GoP are too divided and the religio right don't like McCain, there's probably a whole heap of dodgy stuff from his past about to come out, most of the polling I've seen suggests only Obama can beat him.
