I know some people that act as beaters and some others that go shooting. Being a beater is just ridiculously deferential. The way it is seen as acceptable for the shooters to talk to the beaters makes you want to just burn down the whole place. Then listening to the shooters talk in the local pub makes you want to burn them down too.

The fact that there is some swapping backwards and forwards is irrelevant to the levels of deference that are expected from the beaters to the shooters. I wouldn't be saying that I'd like to burn it with fire if I hadn't observed what I would like to burn.

Not really. Some Scottish shoots tend to be a bit like that I believe, but I've not experienced what you suggest in over 30 years of shooting.

A small group of elite/toff/gentry ones, and then a far greater number of “shooting enthusiast” ones. The former are either insanely expensive or simply not available to us plebs, the rest open to all with an atmosphere to match.

It depends on the type. Grouse shoots are the ones that most people think of and they are extremely expensive. Some estates are like that too. The majority of shoots are pheasant and partridge on farmland which are nothing like as pricey and attract everyone from milkmen to brain surgeons.

Personly I can't get too animated about the issue. Is it more humane to shoot a fox leaving it to die of multiple pellet wounds. But think the people who really enjoy are fucking weirdos and can't stand braying toffs obviously. Cue, not all those who take part are toffs. Just weirdos then. For some context, I can see the enjoyment in grouse shooting. Skill, aiming at something, guns, dinner. But enjoying watching dogs tare something apart is the mark of a wrongun.
