Mattresses

Nancy_Winks We recently got a memory foam one. I read somewhere that cheap memory foam mattresses are just as good as expensive ones (unlike with other types of mattress), so being a bit skint, that's what we got. It's super king size and I think cost about £100. It's the best fucking £100 I have ever spent (I also reason that if it goes a bit shit after a year, I can afford to replace it). Every night we get into bed and laugh with happiness (we've had it a few months at least). If I get 6 hours sleep on this mattress I feel like I did after 8 on the other one. Seriously :D They aren't for everyone but well worth looking into.

Another hate memory foam here. I bought a vispring and it's been fantastic but after this baby has arrived it'll be over 8 years old and it feels it now. I've just ordered a new bedstead and if this doesn't help it'll be new mattress time :)

Definitely buy the best you can afford. How much of your life are you going to spend in near full-body contact with it? Significantly more than you do with your partner....
(e2a - unintentional suggestion there that I have bought the best wife I could afford )

I have chronic pain problems, fibromyalgia, serious sleep disturbance, blah, so obviously it's pretty important to me, but anyone wanting to avoid that kind of stuff should invest to save when it comes to mattresses. I'm another one can't get away with memory foam - I seize up if I don't change position regularly so the way it locks you in one posture really doesn't help. Pocket springs, and as many of them crammed in there as your budget will allow, is the way to go.

Foam mattreses can be hot and sweaty and not great for bad backs. Ours started off ok but after a few years I found I was waking up soaked in sweat regularly. I thought it was just me but we got a new bed, with sprung mattress recently and the night sweats are gone. And thank fuck cos we're going through a load of stress right now and considering it all I've slept pretty well!

Memory foam is v temperature dependant. I hate mine (it's a topper - I have a pocket sprung, that has a latex top, with an extra memroy foam on top of it)

Tbh it's one of the worst purchase I've made. The fucker in Ikea (on an identical bed) was full on marshmallow snuggly, though what I'm lying on now is this rock hard unforgiving self flagulation exercise EVERY NIGHT. I paid £160 for the fucker too

We're planning on buying one soon <subscribes to thread>

I don't like my memory foam pillow so will probably not go for that type of mattress.

Our latex mattress is much cooler than the pocket sprung we had before. It is pretty firm though, which I prefer because of my back.

On a holiday in gran canaries we took this 'bed excursion' not having a clue what it was about, but it was a canny day out but included an advert session regarding merino mattresses etc, didn't bother, but talking to others who go there on a regular basis they give rave reviews
Anybody who can give an impartial review?

Another vote here for spending as much as you can afford. Think of what you would pay for a new sofa and then think how much time you spend on your sofa compared to how much time in bed :)

We are on our second expensive mattress now. It should have been around £1,600 but we got it half price as it was ex display and had a small mark on one corner.

I love my mattress.

I am also going to say spend as much as you can afford.
It's fairly shit advice from me, as I always seem to be hovering over the poverty border.
Thankfully in better days in years gone by I got a really good mattress - and as I spend about 1/3 of my life on it, it's more important than pretty much anything else I could spend my money on.
Oh and if you can, get good pillows - fuck the cheap shit from your local market, next time you need to buy a pillow try to rustle up £20 to get a decent one from John Lewis (seriously, best pillow I've ever had, neck problems a thing of the past)

I was thinking about getting a new mattress, but the logistics of dragging it from flatshare to flatshare with put me off somewhat.

As a compromise, I forked out on a really good pillow. A tempur one for 80 quid. I remember the disbelief at my work where I had it delivered, and everyone was like : "You eighty what?".

I do adore it and look forward to bedding my head on it every night. Together with some earplugs when needed against bathroom sounds I have the most heavenly sleeps now.

Just came hunting for this thread as my mattress is fucked  got my eye on a silent night one, I assume they're ok? Will look at the loaf link though Manter thanks x

I've got a snug 1000 from amazon and it's amazing. Less than 300 quid too for a double: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003U6KK...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0Q1SWFHJME2BQP6ZZVBA

I really do want a new mattress. Don't they say if you're heavy you should go for a slightly firmer mattress? I'm quite heavy. I do want a cloud to sleep on though. My current mattress is like concrete.

Them loaf ones then, the most popular one seems to be the firm one, is that right? Manter - is yours firm? Is it still soft, iyswim?

Yes- I love it :)

If you have lots of curves, a softer mattress might be better, as a firm one will push your spine out of alignment. I went for a firm one, because I didn't read up on it properly, and only really started to get reasonable sleep after I bought a thick memory foam topper to absorb pressure from my hips.

Heavy is a good word... 'She was a lot like you (maybe not quite as heavy)'. Er... non-gamers that isn't a horrifically sexist joke btw.

I want a new mattress but who ever stays in one place these days? I think the most I've managed since leaving home is two years. Could get some decent pillows, hate the memory foam ones though. Am in Japan and have been sleeping on quite stiff futon things, quit like that. Also sometimes just fall asleep on tatami. They have a little give in them and the reeds just feel really nice under your hands. Nice to stretch out on. Probably a terrible faux-pas of course.

This is a good point. I have very wide hips, and my legs hurt when I lie on my side because of the massive distance as they fall down and my hips push up. My lower back, right in the curve of it, hurts often in bed too, and my upper spine. My current mattress is a rock, though, with no padding to speak of, so I feel like anything would be better at this point. But I don't want to fuck up this purchase and the prospect of traipsing around bed shops to try them out isn't fun. Plus I live in a shit place where there aren't many (there's a Debenhams, I think there's a Bensons Beds somewhere), and I don't drive to get to any good ones.
