Matalan - members only?

Its probably to allow some sort of wholesalers tax dodge thereby allowing the cheaper prices.

I don't think anyone is stupid enough to think they're buying anything other than throwaway fashion.

I don't know about the quality of the women's clothing, but I have some men's polo shirts I use for cycling to work in, and they have lasted years.

ah ok :)

but still, thats what I always end up thinking in primark - how can you make hoodies for a fiver? etc

and also - how can a shop get into quite such a state!!

^ this - if you want cheap clothes Primark is far better - even Matalan's home section - if you look around you can get much better then their crap and at a better price.

But Matalan do quite a number of branded products at a saving - Ben Sherman shirts, sometimes Levis etc.
The problem in the Brighton one is the punters. Frightening!
And I find it difficult to find things in my size- most things are too large.
Now why is that? I'm "normal"

Do not fill in correct details on form, 'cos they only send junk mail. Thus problem sorted.

I've shopped in Matalan for years. Rarely buy much but the underwear's cheap and the pyjama trousers are good. Never ever been offered or asked for a card. I think I'd leave the stuff on the counter and fuck off if they did.

I know, I deal with claims for Primark and you wouldn't believe the number of people who slip on discarded packaging.

They basically don't have enough staff to go round tidying up. The bigger stores are better though, the ones in Cardiff and Swansea are so much better laid out and nicer to shop in than the one in Broadmead.

I expect the new one will be better.

you should go to peckham!! seriously, that was the only one I knew for ages. Broadmead is serene by comparison.

I always thought that this was the reason for requiring membership - if its a members club it will probably pay less tax somehow than a normal shop (or maybe that was the situation when it started up and then they realised the value of having a database of all the cutomers so continued it)

the Brighton one

If I lived in Brighton I'd go to TK Max - it's mad there though

Some one needs to tell the Matalan staff in Dalston then. They have never asked me if I am a member or tried to sell me a card...

The Dalston one is the only one I've ever been in and every fucking time they try to shove their cards at me! I think I did get one at some point but no idea where it is now - I hate any form of store 'loyalty' card. After my slagging off Matalan I did buy some nice cushions for my new sofa last week :D

afaik you used to have to have a card as they operated as a cash n carry type store like macro rather than as a shop. in accordance to this, they could sell only to members not the general public. cards had a nominal membership fee to represent this. now, prices seem to have gone up, and the card is being given free as a reward card which entiles holders to purchase special deals (like 2 for £10 things). if you dont have a card, you'd have to pay full price for both items. however, some stores seem to be implementing the old system still, while others have big signs saying you no longer need a card.

edited to add: stores used to be just like big warehouses, no mannaquin displays and such like, while now its just like any other shop inside
