masterchef

It was a difficult one to judge. All three of em did more than enough to beat previous Masterchef winners imo.
They had the sad misfortune to all try for it on the same year and they can only pick one of them.

I do think Jon was there just to fill a demographic mind. The plain down to earth food market.
They might have bigged up a lot of his food once he got into the final but was it really that difficult to do?

I don't think that's completely fair - I mean I'd say starting and running your own business is probably harder than the competion, and it's not as if the people who did win haven't worked flippin' hard to win. Starting a business is hardly an "easy option"

And public/tv appearances? The telly and Heat magazine are hardly awash with the winners faces and their latest shenanigans are they - it's hardly Big Brother

Most famous person I can think of that's won Masterchef and is still in the public eye is Thomasina Wotsit who opened Wahaca...

But yay! for James winning!

All the finalists of previous years seem to have done well out of it:

Money to effort ratio. How much effort would they have to put in to find a chef's job that would pay as much as running their own resturant? There aren't that many employeed head chef jobs that pay those kinds of amounts.

They do a few TV ones at the start and then they die off. The public appearances aren't big ones. Opening people's restuarants, turning up at the odd nightclub. That sort of shit. Radio DJ level of public appearance, still al ot of money in it though, more than a chef earns. Limited lifespan too but then the chef's contract they were giving out was only for a year.

Bollocks to that I reckon - they're not interested in that kind of fame - they just want to cook for a living!

Wait a minute - are you saying it's harder to find a well paying chef's job than to run your own restaurant? You're having a soapy.

And of course running your own restaurant requires so little effort
They have the added bonus of having a name before they've even started though, haven't they? It escalates them a few jumps up the ladder. Not saying it's easy though.

And 'soapy'? I've been thinking and thinking and I still can't work it out :(

bum and bugger, have i missed it??

who won?

edit: ok, i've stopped being lazy and scrolled up. so James won. i thought he might.

did Emily and Jonnny take it ok? ws there a runner up?

Running a successful resturant can earn you £100k a year.

Working your way up the chef's career ladder until you reach a job that pays £100k will take you years jumping from one job to another, whether you won some silly little TV competition or not.

Running a restaurant CAN earn you £100K a year, but almost certainly won't, and it takes an awful lot of effort, fame or no fame

And many of the contestants of Masterchef are earning that kind of money already - James was a barrister. I think money is rarely an influence on wanting to be a Masterchef winner.

Yeah, looking back at past contestants it's interesting to note how many of them have or had well-paying careers - bankers, City types etc.

I saw James on BBC Breakfast  this morning and he said that when he was a teenager, he told his dad that he wanted to be a chef. His dad advised him to follow his academic leanings and go into law initially as it would be easier to go from barrister to chef than it would from chef to barrister (or some other big career change).

How many finanlists of Masterchef said that they so much wanted to be top chefs but instead of working as chefs in resturants went on to work with food in less demanding ways?

From that link posted earlier only 2 of em have gone on to be involved in the resturant trade and 1 permantly in the catering trade. The rest have gone onto consultancy, teaching and writing.

What has being the best cook got to do with being a dad?

Nothing at all really - I was just responding to one Mays' Reasons for liking James better than Johnny, was that James only talks about food whereas Johnny Talks about his family (which is irritating, apparently - I think the opposite).

It wasn't a reason I disliked him, I just thought it was quite an interesting ploy. Johnny was presented as Mr Salt-of-the-earth but I think he was working hard to win the competition in every way he could think of. Which isn't a criticism, necessarily.

And this is one of the reasons I HATE James. With Johnny you get the feeling that he is doing it for him and his kids, and looking after your kids takes up much more of your time when you're a single dad, no?

James is always saying that moments are the "best in his life". What about your wedding or the birth of your, child, James.

What a cunt. A smug, floppy-haired posh cunt, whos' food is consistently over complicated (unlike Johnnies) without the genius of Emilies (most of the time). For me he was the most middle of the road of the three.

If all three opened hypothetical restauraunts; I'd got to Johnnies because his food, would be good, wholesome and tasty, Emilies, because it is creative and unusual, but I suspect James' would be twice the price of Johnnies and leave you thinking, why did I just pay all that money for that?

<deep breaths>

fucking class

Ah so you have been to a Michelin Star restuarant before then.

Top tip, they don't like it when you say:
"Is that it? Bung some chips on the plate for us as well will ya?"
