Masterchef

Thomas's food was probably what is order in a restaurant myself. Lush  .

Well deserved winner, although Sandy's dessert made my mouth water.
Yeah, me too. Thomas's starter and main plus Sandy's dessert for me off last night's menu.

I've never eaten in a proper 'tasting menu for £100+' style fine dining restaurant. Can someone on here who has tell me what's so different? John's comment last night that Thomas's food wasn't fine dining had me pondering whether I'm that fussed about 'fine dining' tbh. Gimme a lush ox cheek with some beautiful veg and a rich gravy and I'm possibly as happy as I can be. Artistic presentation is all very well, but that's going to be destroyed by me within seconds of starting to eat anyway.

I normally fast-forward the contestants with their families bit, but watching Sandy's section last night and reading between the lines, by fuck she's had a hard time of it. I was rooting for her after that. Pleased for her that she finished on a good day.

yep - i had it down as between sandy and thomas from the quarter final stage. He does hearty, unpretentious "soul food" thats going to taste great and make you feel good- and does it really well . What's not to like? its not arty or leftfield - but he has his own style and he has stuck to it. Seems very confident and never gets flustered. Seems a nice, down to earth bloke as well - shame hes some city banker type. Im sure he'd be a big success if opened a chain of restaurants.
If you could pick one of the contestants to come and cook you a meal - id definitely pick him.

agree with the comments earlier about how its irritating when they cook for all these rich twats - be better if they had a bunch of ordinary people - the views of people who have never eaten this level of food before would be far more interesting and entertaining.

Yep. Well it's all very fancy and that, but I prefer how my nan does it.

This is based on not too much as I've never had that 'level' of food, but I suspect a degree of Emperor's new clothes about some of it. The upside-down flan in an egg, for instance. Now I really like flan (the Spanish version), but I'm not sure how much better Albert's could be than regular flan. The presentation is fun, I guess, but when I'm hungry, I just want to eat. To some degree, the setting, the presentation and the name on the door will make it taste better, like how a wine tastes better if you're told it is an expensive one.

I hoped Sandy might win so she'd open a decent restaurant here in Reading :(

As for Thomas. Yeah. Is gastropub what MasterChef is all about though?

I wanna see crazy pretentious stuff. Foams and soils and smoking the like. Food escapism. Not stuff I already eat/have eaten/will eat in an overpriced pub.

He did execute everything he did perfectly. But yes, it was the same style every time he got the chance to make his own food. He won't be opening up a Michelin star restaurant but I'd love to eat at one of his pubs.

Anyway, Thomas was definitely the safe choice of Brexit Britain. Sandy or the other one should have won, but creepy nobhead Torode would never have allowed it.

Tbf to torode he didn't hate Sandy's blue soup, and acknowledged the east Asia use (he is self-appointed expert on se Asia after all). It was all the UK critics who hated it.

Thing I'm in a minority here in that I don't mind either John or Greg as judges. They run out of adjectives in their descriptions so recycle them, but so do all the other ms judges. Even jay rayner would struggle not to do that.

I expect lots of you noticed the MC final was the Guardian's tv pick of the day on Friday but on Saturday the show was pilloried in their when good tv goes bad column

Yeah, I reckon Monica is probably most people's favourite judge. I liked Michel Roux Jnr as well - him and Monica was a great combo, she worked/works for him I think. Marcus Wareing can be well, a bit wearing.

Michel Rpux Jnr was always a pleasure to watch to. He was genuinely in love with what he was doing. Marcus Wareing has those moments where he's really lovely but you can tell he's actual a bit of a knob in real life I think.

I like Marcus Wareing, he doesn't suffer fools gladly.

I'm up to the last of the qualifying rounds. "If I didn't look at it, I'd be fine".

I like Grace Dent.

They're all very good this year, I wonder if Covid meant that a lot of chefs who would be too busy thought they'd give it a go.

Jono squeezed through by the skin of his teeth there. Bone marrow is NOT for pudding.

I like him and Sartash though. They seem to be enjoying themselves which is rare for the professionals.

Ooh when did Materchef re-start please? I can probably bring myself to catch-up if it's just a week's worth. It's tiring at the beginning :o

There's been 6 episodes so far (two weeks of three episodes)

The bit where one of them goes off to watch it in a separate room during the skills challenge is a bit annoying.
