Battenburg (or at least proper shop bought Battenburg) is covered with 'what the fuck', not marzipan. It is one of those alleged food stuffs that contains no actual food. Nice, though.

I feel as though you must have suffered recent cake disappointment - I agree, marzipan is horrible.
Way too sweet.
I feel the same about a lot of icing too (although buttercream can be nice if it's chocolate or coffee flavoured to add some bitterness).

Sometimes, even when you peel away the devil's spawn of marzipan, its hideous taste still oozes inside from what should be a tasty cake.

The full marzipan sweets are a bit too much for me.
Not particularly keen with it on cakes.
I don't mind it on battenburgh. I feel its normally thin enough and with enough cake to make it an accompanying experience rather than the dominant one
