Martin Scorsese

Gangs of New York was shambles.

I believe the Scorsese/DiCaprio pairing has been a disaster with only The Departed showing a modicum of promise (most of which came from the script of the original).

Flabby and a weak ending. But worth watching for the set pieces and Daniel Day Lewis's performance. I loved the Departed-sure it was Scorsese by numbers but it was very exciting and some superb performances in it.

I though DDL's performance was atrociously hammy and put me off watching There Will Be Blood at the cinema - shame cos it's amazing

I'd agree that its OTT but then again so are many acting greats like Pacino or Nicholson....I still find some of their performances mesmerising.

Goodfellas and Raging Bull, altho controversially I'd place The Aviator at 3 or 4 - I really, really enjoyed the film, and it gives Hughes about as sympathetic airing as you can for the man.

I thought that he overdid the VO in Casino, and whereas in Goodfellas it served to add to the story I felt in Casino it's used to much to explain the story. Altho Casino is a better movie aesthetically and technically (just). Also, Pesci's psycho character was a bit worn for me...

Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas - not only his best films but some of the best films ever made.

mean streets: the look, the sounds, the era, the impending car crash, the emotion

taxi driver; ditto

goodfellas: great story, best cocaine depiction ever, epic

I agree, I think he's very talented. Another actor whom I think doesn't receive enough credit, is Matt Damon.

yep, youre right about matt damon too, those 'bourne' movies are a good example...

and he was excellent in the departed and that 1st film he and affleck came out with 'good will hunting'

hes not just a great actor (damon) but an excellent writer, loads probably dont realise that. :)

Also, on a slight tangent, Affleck is a shit actor, but has enormous potential in other areas. After all, Good Will Hunting was very good, and Gone Baby Gone was superb. Can't wait to see what else he does in terms of directing.

Also, the Talented Mr. Ripley.

Rewatched Mean Streets a few weeks ago, definitely my favourite. King of Comedy, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are the ones that come close.

Any else seen Afterhours? Only seen it once but I remember it being really good and an interesting watch. A long time ago when I saw it but probably worth another look.

Goodfellas and Casino are good but a bit too alike to the point I get confused, might rewatch Casino tonight with the teen.

The Departed is boring, tried it twice and couldn't really stick with it. I didn't know it was remake until recently but I didn't get on with Cape Fear after seeing the original, loved De Niro's madman first time round though.

Not seen Gangs of New York, sounded rubbish from the off.

Goodfellas is one of my all time favourite movies.

It was oddly, the first film I ever watched (I must have been around 14 or so) where I suddenly understood what it was a Director actually did and why he/she was so integral to what was happening on screen.

Raging Bull and Casino are also excellent, excellent films and I really enjoyed the Departed too - though as others have said, it is Scorsese-by-numbers.

I actually only watched Taxi Driver for the first time about 3 years ago and to be honest, I found it a bit disappointing.

Not seen Mean Streets yet...

:o

Shark Tale obviously.

Though De Niro maybe edges it with his understated Don Lino

Sorry. It's clearly Taxi Driver.
