Martin Jol has been sacked

oh dear. when is ramos coming in? got a bit of a mess to sort out. new manager, boardroom unrest, underperforming players, sulking players who expected a move in the summer - maybe he can phone curbishley to get some hints on how to save a club from relegation? ;)

No point, only fashionable big successful london clubs get get-out-of-jail-free cars.

Does anyone know about this, but they are saying on the radio that Spurs should be chucked out of the UEFA cup because they played without a manager really in place - Jol knew he'd been sacked before the match started. The fans were told officially at half-time.

Apparently this is against the rules, as it gives an advantage to their opponents, playing against a team with, effectively, no manager.

.

I thought that it was leaked to journos late afternoon and picked up by fans at half time. Official announcement was this morning in line with Stock Exchange rules.

If journos knew, you can bet the players knew. Would other UEFA cup teams make the effort to get them kicked out, though?

Why would they. What kind of mindset is that about ?

Fwiw, the fans in the stadium were not "told" anything at any point. An official statement was put on the websie as, I believe, 11.31pm in response to media reports.

As best I understand at the mo, Jol and Levy negotiated his compensation before the match - because Jol had asked in the afternoon if the Ramos deal was finalised, as reports from Spain strongly suggested - - and Levy asked him to stay in charge until the evening game was over.

I am right am I, it is still a sport, right?

It is interesting how little patience club directors have these days. 15 years ago Fergie's job was on the line because he couldn't deliver the title to Old Trafford. It took him 7 years, and he didn't have the perpetuating system of money distribution in the top 4 to contend with.

If you read my post, I was asking if anyone knew anything about this, as it was extensively discussed on the radio today, and I was wondering if it was true. It seemed unlikely to me that they'd have done it that way if it meant they'd be kicked out of the competition, but I thought one of you well-informed people would have more information.

The Spurs fans who phoned in said that they all knew at half-time and that was why there was so much support for Jol during the match.

As for it being just a sport, the governing bodies seem to love throwing fines and bans at people for the slightest excuse.

The Spurs fans didn't "know" at half-time, they heard the same rumours as everyone else. In the ground, that rumour was exacerbated by Jol's demeanour as he always spends the match on the edge of the technical area and on Monday sat down for the game.

You didn't mention "governing bodies" but other clubs "making the effort to get them kicked out."

Not in my first post - in my second I mentioned it as a possible scenario if this was true - given the way that some football clubs seem to do anything to gain the advantage.

According to reports now, though, Jol himself found out by text halfway through the match. I don't know what to believe about this any more - too many conspiracy theories have been in the media.
