Amazing achievement, amazing to get photos back from somewhere so far away - but christ they are boring!

Looks like the bit of waste ground round the back of my flat :)

Extremeley flat compared with many of the equatorial areas of Mars we've seen pictures of in the past.

Good site for a landing base. Instead of building a third runway at Heathrow, perhaps they could move the whole airport there.

Well, what a fabulous and amazing feat to have woken up to!

I should go to bed in the middle of history being made more often.

Win for the Nasa! And Congratulations to all and sundry.

:cool::cool:

I'm ashamed to say I fell asleep watching the NASA broadcast.:o

Still, glad they made it. Apparently these things have a 55% fail rate when it comes to landing.

Or even hitting the planet in some cases.:)

Love the pink sky! Man, I'd love to have a stomp around on the surface of Mars....

Isn't that the Mojave desert - taken through a pink filter?

N.B - If memory serves correctly - there is a gas station to the left of this picture just out of view.

I wonder if the criminal justice bill extends to as far as Mars. First thing I'd do is rig up some NASA speakers and party! They do deserve it, don't they?

Phoenix was photographed on its descent (with parachute deployed)
by the Mars Orbiter:

Apparently, according to one of the NASA guys on the Badastronomy blog, there is a better image in processing, and also Mars Express got off a couple of frames.

Quoth NASA man about the above image

No, we had only one shot at this. Our set up time to take a single image is nearly as long as the whole EDL sequence. There was not enough time to take more than this single image.

Good job!
