Marion Jones admits she is a cheat

The good thing about athletics, is that the real competition is with yourself. That's where the learning can happen.

Good point. 'The best that you can be...'

You've been listening to Whitney again, haven't you? :)

Not saying that pure athletic endeavour isn't valuable on a personal level.. just wonder about the point on a sociological one.

Why should I care that the fastest runner on a thursday happened to be an American? What does it prove?

But kizmet, don't you find it interesting to see how far a human body can be pushed, how fast we can make it move, or how far it can jump/throw? I find it fascinating.

Its beautiful to watch the grace of movement and the interplay between muscles that you can only see on someone of an elite standard.

But there again, this is the woman who watches cricket to analyse bowling actions speaking :o

Things that promote personal improvement will probably have sociological benefits.

Pervert. ;)

No.. I do see what you mean. The human body in action is a beautiful thing at times.. especially when that body was designed for that action.

But, in general, athletics tend to concentrate on a specific set of actions.. repetitive movemements... and in that respect it's not dissimilar to weight training.

The farthest throw is a straighforward thing.. a logical thing... a matter of attributes and timing.

It's aeshetic thing. I think.

Competative sport, however, contains a fluidity... a harmony of mind AND body... that is the same beautiful thing in action... but a lot of different actions. And for a lot of reasons.

Bowling actions, eh? So that's your excuse.... ;)

No, no - my excuse is that its my JOB!

(BTW -I can spot a bowling action that will result in a spondylolithesis a mile away...)

Just to finish the story.....

"SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Disgraced sprinter Marion Jones was released Friday from federal prison after completing most of her six-month sentence for lying about her steroid use.

Jones left a halfway house in San Antonio around 8 a.m., said LaTanya Robinson, a community corrections manager for the federal Bureau of Prisons. Jones, who has a house in Austin, will remain on probation.

Jones' attorney did not immediately respond to a call or e-mail from The Associated Press requesting comment.

The sprinter admitted last October that she used a designer steroid known as "the clear" from September 2000 to July 2001. The drug was linked to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, the lab that became the center of a steroids scandal that touched numerous professional athletes, including baseball star Barry Bonds.

Her admission of drug use in 2007 came after years of denials.

In 2004, she sued the founder of BALCO for defamation after he said she used steroids. The lawsuit was settled the following year, long before she told the truth in a federal courtroom.

Jones gave back the three gold medals and two bronze medals she won at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney before the International Olympic Committee officially wiped her name from the record books in December."
