I also seem to remember that at Live8 when some questioned the lack of black acts on the bill, the organisers pointed to Mariah, who believe it or not has some black blood in her a long way back. It's not really apparent to look at her though is it?

I know I'm replying to a 14-year-old post here, but Mariah Carey's father is Black.

erm... oh kay

I've not been following closely but I think early Mariah was a little more self-possessed - later its all gets endlessly force-smiling and preening. Its rare to hear her sing and have some genuine emotional connection with it I find. Maybe there are some deeper album tracks out there, but somehow I doubt many. This ones from the heart and from experience

....she had a really tough childhood for sure

A few saccharine pop-chart moments I've liked I guess... I can think of Honey, Vision of Love, Dream Lover, Emotions, Fantasy <lol, what a tracklist. Not exactly social commentary is it.

She married Tommy Mattola, mafioso head of Sony Music, which in my mind paints her as the archetypal mobsters gal. I get the impression - and thats all it is, who knows for sure - she is dominated by powerful men around her. She doesnt come across as having the strength of other 'diva-ish' solo female singers in her pay grade. But who knows...I dont begrudge her at all. Ive also read she's Bipolar...
Alt-rock legend. Apparently

" I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery " <I wish there was more of that in her own material. It all feels very controlled and pretending. As I say, maybe there are moments out there in the album tracks, but the best soul singers tap that angst directly - to me she seems to avoid it

And her Mum is Irish! Pop fact

Also (though her name is nothing to do with her Irishness). Carey is an Anglicized form of Ó Ciardha, which means 'descendant of Ciardha', a personal name derived from ciar 'dark', 'black'.

If I was her, my next move would be to reignite the Celtic mood music scene and battle it out with Enya under the name Mary Ó Ciardha.

every artist needs a vision

I’m sure there’s a good voice in there somewhere - if only if she could sing a song without reminding us every few seconds of her multi-octave range. It’s like the vocal equivalent of an annoyingly “busy” jazz guitarist - sometimes less is more.
