I can't stand her music - as with many r&b/soul singers, an outstanding voice wasted on appalling dross material. That wiki link taught me something, though - what I'd always called "that fucking over-cooking every note hideous show-off-my-voice warbling" (or TFOCENHSOMVW for short) is actually called "melisma".

i think they often can be - i mean samantha fox sold about 30 million albums!

but for this particular thread, from a vantage point mariah is definitely not crap, she can definitely sing and has some talent, but in the same vein of Elton John she cheesegrates the skin and is a warbler.

Pretty much agree with this.

I think her self-regard is quite funny really. It's almost something a comedian would fabricate in a RnB Spinal Tap-esque way. The story about her not getting out of the car because the carpet wasn't pink is great.

Harry Nilson's is the version - theres a "trash techno" or something track Peel played that sampled Mariah's an made it sound good. her's was the first version I heard of that song, heard short clips of Nilson and Badfinger's original on a tv pop quiz show and could tell the difference in quality instantly. last time I heard it IIRC was soon after the news of her breakdown/(aledged)suicide attempt (some european staition decided to be sensitive and play it )
and it still sounded like fake over emoting even witht he knowledge of her genuine pain
