Margate: worst seaside resort?

Southport. A seaside resort sans sea.

With a town that could be immeasurably improved by an airstrike.

I kinda like Southport - Lord Street's elegant, though I suspect the Napoleon story to be bullshit. Bit of redevelopment happening on the sea front, too.

That bit of the coast is fantastic, IMO. Walked last year from Southport to the Gormley exhibition along the wide, sandy, totally empty beach on a glorious day. :)

seconded, was there the other day (convenient end to cycle ride, wanted to reach the coast), stayed for about 10 minutes and cycled the 4 miles back to Lancaster...

The front does look quite lovely now though and such wonderful views-have a bit of a soft spot for Morecambe-the only place where the charity shops have Gap and Miss Selfridge on the 'Designer clothing ' rail:D

Don't know where people are getting these nostalgic memories of margate from, I first went there in 1977 and it was already shite back then.

I quite like Margate. Nice beach, and the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to.

I hope they lock up whoever burnt down the scenic railway (as I remember it being called when I was a kid) for a very long time.

Yes, there has been a tendency for things to 'catch fire' in Kent as far as that particular developer goes :(

Actually, Weston-super-Mare has to be up (or down) there.

Who decided to call it 'Super' eh? What the fuck is Super about Weston SUper mud?

Hang on....

Mare.....Night'mare.....Super Nightmare......a really bad fucking nightmare....

Weston the Super Nightmare..........ah....

Anyone mentioned Ramsgate yet..??

Nice town but full of inbred morons..

Poor Ramsgate. I remember going to the arcades and swimming pools on the seafront when I was a kid. I went back there last year and it's all gone. There's just a casino right on the front and a big empty patch of ground where everything used to be. At least Margate has a decent beach and the potential to be something again. Ramsgate's just a bit lost. A nice harbour and that's it.

I would have thought anyone who goes to a kent beach and expects anything else probably wants therapy.
Rubbish, there are some fantastic seaside towns in Kent...if you know where to look. Whitstable, Dungeness, Broadstairs, Sandwich, Hythe etc.

Sadly, there is also Leysdown.

Southend must be a hot contender.

Last time I went there was a punch up in the street and a family handing out fags to their kids. ( real fags :()

Southend is lovely.

(and where I am from - well, the posh bit next door, init).

The people giving out fags were probably out of towners. Tsk.

Though last time I was there in the sun, every man was topless. It was rank. It was just flesh, as far as the eye could see. White flesh, pink flesh, brown flesh, toned flesh, flabby flesh. In that quantity though, it all became the same and no man was noticably attractive or unattractive. They were all just, well, flesh. :(

Sandwich isn't on the seaside of course, but it's nice enough. As long as you don't have to grow up there. ;) Sandwich Bay is OK I guess. Just a bit of coastline more than anything else.

Broadstairs and Whitstable are the best Kent seaside towns I think.

What about Herne Bay?

My love for Herne Bay's charity shop mile and the homely charms of the Family Restaurant - my lunch spot of choice on the north coast - are well documented.
:p

That bloody second hand record shop is still too expensive though.

Deal, of course, is the up and coming spot on the east coast. Hard to believe but vaguely true...

You mean 'B-Side The Seaside'? Great name, though.

Heh, the Family Restaurant :) You want L'Escargot for fine dining ...

Got thrown out of a public toilet in Harwich once. A bloke came along, banged on the door and demanded I leave because he wanted to lock up. It was about half past four on a Saturday.

Couldn't find anywhere to get a decent meal, it was a dive worse than even Cleethorpes.

Margate is really cool! I was there a few months ago.

It's got a fantastic beach, which is not at all full of braying holiday types. It's got fabulous chip shops, some of which even do vegetarian options. When I was there, there was a really cute exhibition on at a little art gallery thingy that looked out over the seafront. It is certainly trying to be trendy...

It's got so much potential, and property prices are cheap, so it might actually turn into a happening place.

Well, I haven't been for quite a while, I must admit. It's possible that they've now transformed it into one of the world's top 10 holiday destinations.

However, it seems to me that any beach worthy of the name requires a visible sea - to compliment it, and give it meaning and context. Without a visible sea even the most beautiful beach in the world is just going to look like a big, random pile of sand - dumped there by disgruntled truck-drivers, perhaps, during a pay dispute.

Is that what happened?

Perhaps.. :)

Mate of mine lives in Birchington. It's a two-pub town, and considering it's a good 20 minute walk to the coast, I refuse to call it on-Sea..

Margate the worst seaside resort.....fuck off.....its got to be brighton, whitstable or southwould.....wankers....

Ever seen West Wittering? I went there towards the end of the 70s and it seemed like the most desolate stretch of pebblebeach I'd ever seen. No idea if it's any better now.

Dover used to be fun when the Hoverport was still there. Great fun watching them roar in and out of the port, spraying up fluffy huge clouds of water mist in their wake!

Brighton is loads better than Margate, except for the beach. I didn't like Whitstable, it's too poncey and stinks of fish.

 Brighton beach is nice! You can watch the sun glinting off the water, planes and boats zipping past and rides spinning and swooping on the pier, along with thousands of sparrows nesting on the west pier.

Plus there's the nekkid beach, where most people keep their clothes on but there are hardly any tourists, or overexcited kids :)
