Maori Guerillas?

As a Pakeha (and a liberal one) I really dont think the maori have much to complain about anymore...
.

What, like higher rates of unemployment, poorer health, lower incomes, massively over-represented in prisons, higher rates of mental illnesses...

I think there are still legitimate grievances personally - Maori are more likely to be in jail, more likely to be unemployed, more likely to have drug and alcohol dependancy, they live for a shorter time (between 7 and 10 years) and have poorer health. That's without even going into the land/fisheries/foreshore claim issues. Many of their problems though are in essence problems of class nto race though, so they are not unique to the Maori experience.

The more worrying trend is that the NZ govt, which has long been too much in thrall to the security services, is using the flimsy pretext of islamist terror to deliver a good smacking to the people that they don't like. Ite may not be the most appealing character, but the consequences for social cohesion etc can't be goo din the long term.

I don't see how the things you've listed above are entirely the fault of Pakeha - surely they should take some kind of responsibility for their own destiny? They're in a far better position to do so than any other indigenous people.. (and i dont mean by blowing up parliament ;)

In the interests of balancing the argument here, its worth noting that the Maori have suffered more than their fair share of corrupt politicians - not helpful to their cause.

Stuff like the Communications Security Bureau who run the Waihopai spy base etc. The govt is generally quite paranoid about subversives and stuff though, and is not above using the security services to put the frighteners on people they think are out of line.

Ah OK, I was wondering there...hell, they don't even have an airforce!

NZ's a strange place - at least the pakeha community is...much of it's like the UK stuck in the 1950s; cultural artefacts like steel milkshake cups and shops that feel like the UK in the 1970s (which might as well have been the 1950s where I grew up)...alternately very, very relaxed and liberal. I spent loads of time around Golden Bay and it was remarkable how a combination of pretty decent benefits and lots of space meant if you wanted to there were a lot of niches one could slot into provided high falutin' living isn't your style.

As long as they did not tarher non-combatants (state emloyees are not non-combants to my thinking), I wish they would be successful. Whites have done little other than rape brown and black skinned cultures (including Asians and Native Americans).

As for it being comical because they bought uniforms at surplus stores. Hezbolah does the same and not to many look at them as comical. KLA in Kosovo did the same...

Gabi: Even if they were all billionaires, it WAS their land. Whites decimated their culture and numbers.

As for those questioning whether or not they are indigenous...EVEN IF they are there by expansionism, they remain from the pre-Europeans and therefore shhould be given the land.

nah, not really. Their population is expanding and the culture and use of te reo (Maori) is increasing. Their shit loads better off than Palestinians in the occupied territories, for example, although that is saying very little.

Judging by what I saw of popular culture when I was in NZ last, it's definitely 'cool' to be maori, or be associated. Adverts used maori imagery, shops use maori names, the art designs are everywhere.
