Man dies after being suspended from a chimney in Carlisle

Shit. Been listening to news of this on the radio. Thought he was hanging down the inside of the chimney, but like that

Poor bloke; that does look horribly like a bungled suicide attempt.
His left foot looks like it's trapped between the rungs of the ladder.
Fucking hell.:(

It does look like that - doesn't seem likely that someone would climb up a 290ft chimney for a laugh, even if drunk. It must be incredibly painful too hanging by a foot like that. :(

How did he get up there?
And why cant someone or two just follow him up and grab him and cut his laces to release him...and let him drop into a big blown up cushion like they use for stunts in films.

Wind might blow him off course or even into the face of the chimney.

Also, attaching a harness is going to be tricky. Anything that risks dislodging him risks dropping him, until he is safely fastened, especially if he is unconscious, as seems to be the case.

I don’t envy the rescuers. :(

Ladder.

Because, (a) it's not a film, but real life, and (b) it's 290 feet up.

I know. And the idea is still sound.

The best way down is into something that will catch him safely. If he's unconscious then someone has to go up there and loosen him from the step. And if there is a ladder then surely someone experienced could go up it?

Either way...a fall into a giant cushion or whatever they are called is safer than other options...surely? And quicker..at this stage?

But the drop is not an issue if he is dropped on to a soft landing...

Do they even have a giant cushion? And where would the put it? It might not be possible to place it directly below the poor man as the surface could be unsuitable or there might be other buildings below.

I regularly use smaller ones with work, highest I've used was about 100ft. While they won't go over - if operated correctly within their design parameters - the amount of "bounce" in the basket is pretty entertaining at times, god knows what it's like in one that high.

You wouldn't get me up there.

A mate used to climb the 300ft mast on the last Radio Caroline ship, the sea could be almost like a pond, but up there he would be fucking swaying all over the place.

I have a funny feeling they know better than you. ;)

It’s 290 ft. If there’s any wind, the fall would not be predictable. Into the bricks wall of the chimney. Onto surrounding roofs or road. And we don’t know how clear the vicinity is to allow total coverage.

Anyway, if butchers is right, he has now been winched to safety.

Suicide, doubtful. A bet on a date maybe.
I was thinking possibly punishment of some kind (seen naked handcuffed to a lamp post before which was grim) but I doubt anyone would be brave/stupid enough to try and get someone up there against their will.
