Making Porridge

Correct, if you're using a microwave. If you do it on the stove, you'll need more liquid, because there's more evaporation. :)

Nonsense, I make my porridge using the half a cup to a cup of liquid and do it on the stove. It only takes 5 minutes to cook doing it the stirring-as-you-go method so not long enough to evaporate much liquid.

My preferred method is to bring it to the boil - on the stove - and transfer it straight to the bowl and leave for 5 minutes. It cooks by its own heat and requires no attention so I can get on with making a pot of tea.

I dabbled with porridge once and hated it.

But this past week I've been having a bowl of ready brek every day and I'm quite liking it now. Perhaps it's the oat flour to rolled oats ratio in it that makes it more palettable? Anyway, sugar/honey for me, made with low-fat milk. If I'm feeling daring, I'll mix a teaspoon of Nutella in :o

Well, I find there's a marked difference in thickness between microwave and stove methods, and adjust liquid levels accordingly.

(Of course, it's best if you use oatmeal, rather than rolled oats, and steep it overnight).

Very informative, thank you.

I'm quite happy with my Ready Brek. I've just bought some supermarket own brand that has exactly the same ingredients in it but was cheaper. I only have a small bowl each morning, so don't get through it quickly. Although all this talk of porridge makes me want some for tea tonight as well.

Sir Walter Scott, who was a regular visitor to the impoverished Wordsworths' in the Lake District, wrote to a friend "you get two hot meals a day, but two of them are porridge".

I like that :)

As long as I eat the occasional banana, apple or leafy vegetable, I can't see the problem. Plus, imagine my low cholesterol level!!!
