Making calls and texting when driving: discussion

By the way Ed, I know what a Scania is but what model and year of vehicle was he driving as it does make a huge difference. The link would be appreciated.
What is the point of this weird, desperate denial please? He was a professional driver, he was driving a HGV lorry big enough to kill someone inside a Transit van and I'm fed up spoon feeding you links which you persistently ignore. If you're so bizarrely fascinated by knowing the exact model and date of the HGV lorry, look it up yourself, you lazy git.

I always see cyclists texting and chatting on their phones too. Anyone who is on the road, regardless of the vehicle they are in charge of, shouldn't be using their phones.

Seeing as you're so rubbish researching anything, here's a photo of the scene of the crash. If you'd bothered following the links posted you would have already seen it. There's big lorries everywhere.

I have made my position clear on texting while driving and speaking on a handheld handset so no need to repeat them.

Speaking on a hands free phone is more distracting than not speaking on a hands free phone and instead concentrating only on your driving.

The "hands free" aspect of hands free is that drivers can keep both hands on the steering wheel while talking.

We often do other things than just driving, we have conversations with other people in the car, we might smoke, we may quickly scan a map, we may be partly concentrating on directions (often an essential part of a new journey), we adjust our music players, the radio, CDplayer and whatnot, we may listen to our satnav.

For me the questions are:

1) is talking on a hands free set more dangerous than the above mentioned activities?

2) does talking on a hands free phone present too great a risk to be permitted?

Why does every single debate about anything that happens on the road always have to include somebody saying "oh yes, but I've seen cyclists doing that"?

Every single time. I really, really don't get it. Cyclists make up a tiny percentage of road users.

Because it demonstrates that the problems on the road are down to individuals rather than their chosen mode of transport.

Oh right.

So a debate about whether drivers should be punished more severely for texting than talking on a mobile includes a debate about cyclists using headphones and an observation that "I have seen cyclists texting" in order to demonstrate that the problems on the road are down to individuals rather than their chosen mode of transport.

Chinny reckon.

Whilst I also agree with tommers reponse to you, there is a point here. It's not actually a case of one mode of transport being universally driven by wankers, but that some wankers use a mode of transport of some kind. But it does also seem that there are specific in and out groups on the road which are determined by what mode of transport you use, and also how you use it. I think when people get into that them and us mindset, we forget it is about the individuals at the end of the day.

Edit: having said that, I wonder if certain forms of transport encourage certain mindsets.

I haven't heard too many reports of texting/mobile phone using cyclists piling into the back of cars at speed and killing road users.

Neither have I but then anybody on the road who drops their concentration will risk being part of an accident.
I'd say the lack of deaths caused by texting cyclists rather proves that problems on the road are down to both individuals and their chosen mode of transport. In other words, I completely disagree with your earlier comment.

If there are any cyclists stupid enough to text as they pedal, the only problems they're likely to encounter is their face hitting the tarmac, whereas texting drivers can - and have - killed and injured other road users and pedestrians,

Doubt it mate - I imagine you were probably just watching Trisha and eating Sugar Puffs out of the box (or whatever it is you do) - but I can see how you might confuse the two.

wow you've nailed me there.

why exactly are your panties in a bunch then.

Tbh, I don't see the problem with drivers and hand free sets. The friends I know who have spoken on them whilst I've been in the car have seemed to remain as alert on the road as they are just chatting to me. Texting and using the phone normally are a different kettle of fish, however.

I agree.
