Make 1 political (serious) forcast for 2008

A new phase of the Palestinian struggle will emerge. As the 'autonomy' given by the Israelis to the occupied territories is more and more realised to be a prison-like sham, the 2-state solution will die a death and Palestinians inside and out the '67 borders and those in exile will begin to demand equal rights in a single state.

Single state I hope not I'm not in favour of bloodbaths.

Israel was founded on a bloodbath and the ensuing history has been one too, so I don't see what's to lose.

And if the great powers chucked the kind of money at peace as they did at war it could work. For the cost of the Iraq war you could buy every Palestinian and Israeli family a house and car.

For the cost of the Iraq war you could give a decent compensation to every Palestinian and Israeli affected by the conflict.

There are a number of reasons. There has been major droughts in America and Australia affecting those countries wheat production, although not all that much on at the end of the day.

(EDITED)
.

Excellent post.

Increasing food prices is not only a UK concern I am afraid... In Greece cereal prices have doubled this year. Durum wheat seed was sold to farmers at 0.33 euros per kilo on 2006, but 0.67 euros per kilo this year. The cost of production therefore is allready increased, combine this with the increased oil prices, the increased fertilizer prices (30% up) and you get the whole picture... There is no doubt that we will start with a high wheat price at next harvest ...

There are also problems with wheat production in Russia, making the whole situation even more difficult.

Countries like China, the more they develop the more food they will demand. More and more people will leave the undeveloped chinese countryside and go to the big cities. Living in the cities though means that you do not produce, therefore you need to buy food. Also life in the cities increases meat consumption, therefore more meat will need to be produced and more cereals are going to be needed for animal feed.

Biodiesel production is also affecting food prices, as products like cereals, maize, sugarbeets and so on can also be used for biodiezel production instead of food.

Fewls. Anyone knows algae is a much more efficient source of biofuels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algaculture#Algae_as_an_energy_source

In November 8, 2006, an entity called "Green Star Products" announced that it has signed an agreement with "De Beers Fuel Limited" of South Africa to build 90 biodiesel reactors with algae as raw material. Each of the biodiesel reactors will be capable of producing 10 million gallons of biodiesel each year for a total production capacity of 900,000,000 gallons per year when operating at full capacity, which is 4 times greater than the entire U.S. output in 2006.

It's in Wiki so it must be true :)

I predict that predictions of world events will outstrip conventional methods of news reportage as a reliable source of real news.

*gets coat*

Seriously though, some interesting predictions there. :) Alas though, I have nothing to add save to say that I may have acted predictably. ;)

Good Post.
And the sad thing is that farmers will grow more edible goods not to eat but to run cars!

Wallonia secedes from Belgium and becomes part of France.

Once again this nonsense? See other thread. What I predicted all along is now reality.

For Belgium in 2008: Verhofstadt IV.

For the rest of the world: Business as usual with USA spiralling downwards while nobody wants to know.

salaam.

Brown to take a real kicking from Cameron, yet win out on the politics.

Further apathy amongst everyone as everything goes to hell.

Obama Vs McCain, with result depending on whether there is a convenient "terror incident" or "spectacular" during the campaign period.

Livingstone vs Johnson to be too close to call in London.

Ballot rigging/fraud/queries/scandals to surface around either or both of these elections.

Continuing increased prominence for environmental issues along with accompanying (and in UK and US increasingly nasty and extreme) anti-green backlash.

Bush is heavily subsidising / promoting the biofule programme - partly as an effort to keep his distance form what he considers increasingly flaky nation - like Chavez in venuzuela - also its a nice bit of PR fp the big agrobiz lobby in DC.

It's immoral. Free competition between unequally equipped people. There's no way that the Third World poor are going to be able to compete with the First World.

Assuming that the science behind peak oil is correct, in the medium to long term, global population is going to decline.

My prediction for the USA continuing competitive currency devaluation and rising protectionism.
