Major bush fires in Victoria, Australia, many dead...

Death toll is up to 173 as of 8:30am here in Melbourne :(
I very rarely get moved by this stuff but this is so terrible.
2 of my friends live in affected areas. They were evacuated and wisely took the advice. They still can't go back so don't know if they have a home. What I found most suprising was how close it was to Melbourne! St Andrews is basically the suburbs and now its gone in to Healsville too which is just as close.
Apparently the wind is going to get up again this week :(
So terrible.

Maybe I'm just being a div but I couldn't get either of those numbers to work. Do any Aussies know if Daylesford is affected, or can point me in the direction of somewhere I can find out? My brother and his mum live there.

Pretty sure its not too affected. My brother is in Ballarat and they are all ok, its not too far away.

Awful situation

I don't think 1800 numbers work with an international dialling code. If you google those numbers, you might find some international ones listed alongside.

G'luck.

luckily the fires aren't around there pip.I just googled it but cant find any info related to the town so i am just guessing really.

Daylsford is fine, Ballarat is fine.
Most of the fires are north and north east of Melbourne. Both those places are west.
Panic not :)

Ten years later and Australia is on fire again. This time the greens are being blamed for preventing back burning ( they didn't) and LNP seem to be in denial that they slashed millions from rural and regional fire services ( who are the ones who do the backburning)

Not so many people dead yet, however the fire season started early, we've been in chronic drought for a decade and we're in for another record breaking summer heat wise. Global warming is just so obvious when you live here.

I'm good where I am but they've just evacuated a small town 30ks away. The fire actually jumped a very wide estuary.
