I think the Jules/Andrews version catches the mood of it better than the perkier Tears For Fears version.

it's weird how they are totally different songs. I think the song suits both versions

i bet someone could do a really melancholy version of 'It's the End of the World as we Know It' :hmm:

I like the Tears for Fears version too. But if you're going to sing about anomie, seems the Jules version captures it well.
 
I think the 80s version has the same sense of melancholy, it just reflects it in a different way. Like the Jules/Anndrews version really telegraphs that the song is about not fitting into your time, whereas the Tears for Fears version just sort of says it...

The eighties version wouldn't have worked in the movie.
